To provide clinical leadership and expertise in the speciality of Oncology, with particular reference to the Breast body site by providing information, support, advice and specialist knowledge to patients, their families and carers, and to act as a resource to the multi-professional team.

We are a supportive, Nurse led service, providing patient centred care.

Main duties of the job

To be pivotal in review and development of the service, and to reflect the needs of the patient group and demonstrate wide and in-depth experience of all aspects of oncology and haematology, exercising clinical leadership and effective education within their sphere of practice.

Job responsibilities

The following skills and experience will be required and are essential for the successful candidates:

Clinical
  • To operate autonomously at an advanced level of clinical practice providing research based expert care and advice to all colleagues andmanaging a caseload effectively, making the most of available time.
  • To accept referrals from medical / nursing staff both within and external to the Trust, of newly diagnosed and existing cancer patients.
  • To periodically review caseload and to discharge patients appropriately within the divisional guidelines.
  • To ensure that patients are seen within the recommended time scales and targets where these are in place.

Educational Responsibilities
  • To ensure own practice is up-to-date and evidence based, undertaking relevant study and further education as identified through the personal development process or in response to changing service needs.
  • To attend relevant study days/conferences and network with other advanced / specialist nurses as required.
  • To maintain an up to date knowledge in oncology, using information to effect change in practice and ensure the effective dissemination of new knowledge.
  • To develop and deliver educational programmes to meet the learning needs of health care professionals in hospital and community, to include medical, nursing students and doctors. To share and impart knowledge to GP's as required.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Nurse on appropriate part of the NMC register
  • Relevant oncology Post Graduate qualification e.g. ENB 237


Experience

Essential

  • Extensive post-registration experience of which significant experience must be in oncology
  • Evidence of advanced clinical skills relevant to the role e.g. venepuncture, cannulation and administration of chemotherapy
  • Management experience at band 6 or above


Skills

Essential

  • Clear understanding of the nursing role within the multi-disciplinary team and the ability to effectively represent the interests of the profession
  • Demonstrable leadership skills
  • Effective communicator
