This is a split role between rheumatology and physiotherapy. The post holder will be expected to provide specialist knowledge and care to patients and their carers. They will support colleagues in the effective management of rheumatology patients, who require a high level of judgement, discretion and decision making within an outpatient setting. The post holder will provide education and training to patients, carers, the wider physiotherapy team and other healthcare professionals. They will undertake assessment of patients using a range of different assessment methods. The post holder will actively seek to participate in peer review of their practice and appropriately define the boundaries of their practice.

The post holder will be expected to work towards a prescribing qualification and become proficient in joint aspiration and injection. They will work closely with the current team members, which include nurse specialists, prescribing specialist pharmacist, consultants and rheumatology trainees

Within physiotherapy they will lead the development of a new rheumatology specialist physiotherapy service, to include setting up and running of rheumatology gym and hydrotherapy classes where appropriate and complete an audit of the effectiveness of this change of service. They will also be involved in supervision and education of physiotherapy students.

Main duties of the job

  • Undertake comprehensive health care needs assessment of patients, reassessing as appropriate.
  • To clinically reason and identify appropriate evidence-based treatment and rehabilitation for patients with complex and multi-faceted musculo-skeletal problems, in line with clinical governance and risk assessment.
  • Assess, plan, prioritise, implement and evaluate interventions to meet patients' needs.
  • Contribute to the organisation of multi-disciplinary, patient centred care.
  • Facilitate patients and carers to take an active role in care given.
  • Responsible for assessing and recognising emergencies in their speciality. Able to interpret information and take appropriate action.
  • Undertake and promote practice, sensitive to the needs of patients and families from multi-cultural backgrounds.
  • Advise and support patients to manage their symptoms.
  • Attend Consultant led Outpatient Clinics, manage and report on cases
  • Contribute to and support the work of colleagues in the Multi-Disciplinary Team.
  • Plan systems of activity which satisfy agreed standards at Local, Trust or National levels.
  • To demonstrate physical ability to carry out physiotherapy assessment and interventions including highly developed manual physiotherapy techniques and therapeutic handling.

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential

  • HCPC Registration
  • Degree or Diploma in Physiotherapy
  • Demonstrate up to date knowledge of best clinical practice in relevant speciality.
  • Understanding of professional ethics and their application in practice.
  • Evidence of some managerial training.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based practice.
  • Evidence of recent post graduate study in relevant clinical area.
  • Demonstrate understanding & involvement of Clinical Governance and risk assessment.
  • Broad knowledge of health legislation
  • Clinical educators training.


Desirable

  • Post graduate Diploma or MSc level study relevant to rheumatology.
  • Member of relevant clinical interest group
  • Injection treatment course completed.
  • Non-medical prescribers' course completed
