We have recently received additional funding for a new position for a band 5 Registered nurse. This exciting opportunity will allow you to join the highly regarded team on Plym Neuro Rehab Unit based in the grounds of Mount Gould hospital.

We are a 15 bedded regional unit taking patients from 16 years and above. All our patients have neurological conditions ranging from spinal patients, to those who have an acquired brain injury. As a result there is a mixture of patients with both physical and cognitive issues.

The work is challenging and fulfilling and above all interesting. We work as a multi- disciplinary team addressing the complex holistic needs of the patients.

Main duties of the job

You will be working as part of a Multi disciplinary team in a rehabilitation unit as a band 5 registered nurse.

The ward is a 7 day , 24 hours service.

It will involve internal rotation and weekend work.

Each shift will be 11.5 hours per day, and the frequency will depend upon your contract.

The post holder will work mainly on Plym Neuro-Rehabilitation Unit, Mount Gould Hospital with the potential to work within other rehab wards on site.

The post holder will deliver care to patients with a range of complex neurological issues including acquired brain injury, spinal conditions and conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis.

The Unit accepts referral from the majority of the South West peninsula and has close working relationships with specialist unit at Salisbury Spinal Regional Unit,

Job description

Job responsibilities


1. Providing and delivering a high standard of nursing care by initiating and

co-ordinating the assessment, planning and evaluating of individual patients needs based on evidence.

2. Reporting and documenting any relevant nursing/patient needs, communicating changes with other health care professionals in the multidisciplinary team with ongoing responsibility for patients care as they occur.

3. Using evidence based practice ensure that high standards are delivered and maintained, as directed by each goal/treatment plan.

4. Liaise with relatives' carers of patients offering support and advice, involving them in rehabilitation plans whenever appropriate.

5. Demonstrating and undertaking evidence-based practice playing an active part in the introduction of this evidence to improve patient centred care.

6. Increasing the level of knowledge and skills within the Ward/Directorate through sharing best practice and supporting others to develop their professional abilities.

7. Participate in clinical supervision and reflection, to develop own and others' clinical practice.

8. Supervising, assessing, mentoring and supporting junior Registered Nurses and Health Care Professionals including bank and agency staff in the clinical setting.

9. Implementing and sharing good infection control practice.

10. Newly qualified nurses will undergo a period of six months preceptor ship, to include: one week induction, one week with the professional Lead and two weeks supernummery status induction on the ward.


1. Reporting and managing untoward incidents such as complaints, clinical emergencies, and injury or drug administration errors as detailed in Livewell Southwest-wide and local protocols and procedures.

2. Contributing towards ward or clinical projects to set and maintain standards of practice in conjunction with other team members, participating in audits and quality monitoring.

3. Ensuring that resources are used efficiently and in accordance with agreed procedures.

4. Demonstrating an awareness of and compliance with health and safety regulations/procedures that apply to staff, patients and visitors within Livewell Southwest premises including reporting any deficiencies in equipment, furnishings or matters of hygiene.

5. Accept responsibility for co-ordination of the ward when required seeking advice from senior staff/bleep holder when necessary.

6. Act as link nurse in identified specialist areas and ensure dissemination of best practice in relation to that specialist area.

7. Support junior staff development by assisting with:

i) Annual appraisal of staff and assessment of competence

ii) Involvement in training programmes

iii) Acting as mentors/preceptors

8. Provide support in the recruitment, selection and induction of new staff.

9. Supporting the Ward Sister in identifying developmental needs of staff, using appraisal, and implementing appropriate staff developmental programmes.
