We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Pharmacist to join the Medicine Directorate Pharmacy team at Newcastle Hospitals. The position will be rotational across a number of interesting specialities at both of our renowned teaching hospitals, based in the vibrant city of Newcastle upon Tyne.
Our well-established pharmacy team promote medication safety and optimise medicines use across primary and secondary care. We aim to give you clinical experience and exposure to develop your generalist and specialist skills, as well as providing leadership, management, education, quality improvement and research opportunities.
The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work in different specialities, alongside experienced colleagues based within the medical directorate. These include:
Based in the clinical pharmacy team, you will work collaboratively with medical, nursing and pharmacy staff, and the wider inter-professional team, to deliver person-centred care and provide expert advice on the use of medicines.
Main duties of the job
You will be based primarily on an inpatient ward, optimising inpatient medications and facilitating accurate, safe and effective discharges. You will also help develop and deliver service improvement strategies which promote the safe, rational and cost-effective use of medicines.
You will act as a senior within the medicine team, being a point of contact for assistance and advice for less experienced colleagues, supporting them in their rotations through the directorate. You will also be able to develop your clinical supervision skills and become a Foundation Pharmacist Mentor.
There will be opportunities for personal and professional growth within the role, including support through post-graduate qualifications and independent prescribing, if not already completed. Departmental links with the School of Pharmacy will allow for further opportunities to be involved in research and teaching,
The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the Pharmacy Directorate's extended hours and on call service for a period of 12 months, an excellent opportunity for developing further clinical knowledge, communication and prioritisation skills. You will also be involved in the provision of homecare, supervision of the inpatient dispensary, and will be trained in the screening of total parenteral nutrition and non-oncology cytotoxic medication.
