Working collaboratively with the Director of Integrated Education, Director of Medical Education, the site DMEs and the Head of Medical Education and the Lead for Postgraduate Medical Education, the post holder acts as the Lead for Undergraduate and Foundation Medical Education across all hospital sites to ensure that all national, regional and local policies and procedures affecting undergraduate and foundation medical education are complied with, the NHS Educational Contract and medical school SLAs are delivered and the required local, regional and national educational standards met.

Main duties of the job

Responsibility for ensuring the effective delivery of undergraduate and foundation medical education and training across the Trust in accordance with the NHS England KSS Education Contract (EC) and medical school SLAs. This includes approx. 270 foundation trainee placements for foundation doctors in training (F1/F2/academic) as well as undergraduate placements across all sites for Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and F0 medical students. Required to meet regulatory compliance and Trust standards in ensuring the effective delivery, evaluation, and quality assurance of a portfolio of high-quality medical education and training for UHSx foundation doctors and undergraduate medical students. The postholder also has medical education management oversight of the academic trainees within UHSx.

The post holder has management responsibility for other senior operational managers within the medical education department. The post-holder will work closely with the Lead for Postgraduate Education to ensure the Medical Education team has a robust workforce plan and manage the workforce to ensure high levels of motivation and productivity by maximising multi-disciplinary teamwork and supported devolution of responsibility to front line staff. This will help support the development of effective cross-site and Trust wide communication and teamwork. The post holder will work closely with colleagues within the Integrated Education Division and within Brighton and Sussex Medical School.

Job responsibilities

Act as a specialist in the field of Medical Education particularly for Undergraduate and Foundation Medical Education - with excellent communication skills and expert knowledge.

Communicate with senior managers and clinicians within UHSx and contracted medical schools to raise awareness of the required standards for undergraduate and foundation education and how performance is assessed, requiring the ability to communicate highly complex information to senior managers.

Promote multi-professional learning and the share best practice.

Implement procedures for ensuring the department can deliver the NHS Englands Education Governance and Trusts Clinical Governance agendas and deliver the medical school SLAs. Establish effective systems to monitor education delivery and governance, taking due regard to views of all trainees and medical students.

Person Specification

Experience / Qualifications / Skills


  • Master level education or demonstrable experience of working within Health/Medical Education
  • Significant managerial experience gained at a senior level
  • Experience of organizational and / or staff development initiatives
  • Experience of managing budgets and financial information
  • Knowledge of managing academic programming and training workshops
  • Knowledge of NHS England, KSS Foundation School and GMC / GDC frameworks and statutory regulations
  • Strong leadership and communication skills, with experience of managing people, conflict and negotiating change
  • Highly advanced organisational skills and ability to co-ordinate and prioritise complex projects
  • Awareness and understanding of key NHS service strategy, modernisation agenda, planning and delivery processes as these relate to commissioning and delivery of medical education
