We are looking to recruit a motivated and enthusiastic Band 5 registered childrens nurse to join a flexible, friendly and well supported team delivering safe, effective, high quality care to the children and the families who attend Sunderland Eye Infirmary. Haygarth Childrens Ward comprises of a 4 bedded childrens ward which is staffed by two dedicated Paediatric Nurses who follow the patient journey from pre-assessment to post-operative discharge.

Main duties of the job

On Haygarth, we care for children predominantly for day-case surgery with a variety of ophthalmic conditions which include Strabismus (Squint), Blocked Tear Ducts, Chalazion, Ptosis, Cataracts, Vitrectomy and emergency admissions due to trauma.

The successful candidate will:

Have the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team as well as working upon their own initiative and develop skills specific to ophthalmology.

Provide the highest standard of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluating care without direct supervision.

Deliver care and support throughout the childs journey at Sunderland Eye Infirmary, from outpatient clinic appointments, pre-assessment through to post-operative discharge. Children and families may have a variety of ophthalmic conditions as well as physical, mental and social complexities it is essential that the post holder is sensitive to the emotional needs of the children and their families requiring admission to hospital.

Be able to run pre-admission assessment clinics (PAAC), assist with Intravenous Fluorescein Angiogram for paediatrics in medical photography and venepuncture.service covers there is an increasing need to do pre-assessments via the telephone.

The Ward is open Mon-Fri 07.30- 16.30 (Excluding Bank Holidays). Flexibility is required, on the rare occasion, that there is an emergency admission, as the nurses will stay until the child is discharged or transferred which could be up to 8pm.

To be responsible and accountable for the delivery of safe, effective and compassionate nursing care for patients designated to their care.

To always work to the NMC Code.

To supervise non-registered staff as stipulated by the NMC under the requirements of delegation.

Provide effective leadership and assist with the management and organisation of the ward/department in the absence of the Ward Manager or Junior Sister/Charge Nurse.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • NMC Registered Childrens Nurse, or evidence of qualification if newly qualified
  • Diploma in health related study or equivalent appropriate qualification


Desirable

  • Degree in nursing studies or healthcare related subject (UK equivalent)
  • Mentorship certificate/Practice Assessor training or demonstrable equivalent experience


Skills and Knowledge

Essential

  • Ability to provide and receive complex, sensitive or contentious information
  • Able to work without supervision
  • Competent in the use of IT such as Microsoft Office
  • Evidence of CPD
  • Knowledge of national health and social care policy
  • Knowledge of evidence based guidelines e.g. NICE guidelines, NPSA alerts, current nursing legislation


Desirable

  • Venepuncture and cannulation competency


Physical Skills

Essential

  • Ability to assist patients to move as per Trust Moving and Handling Policy


Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working in an acute hospital or community healthcare setting


Desirable

  • Recent experience of working as a registered nurse
