Southwark CAMHS - Full time (10 PAs) Permanent Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatry posts

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists to join the Southwark CAMH service. Southwark CAMHS is an innovative, enthusiastic service and the post has been developed with additional new investment.

Southwark CAMHS provides a comprehensive range of community-based child and adolescent mental health services across the London Borough of Southwark. The service also has access to National and Specialist services provided at the Michael Rutter Centre, as well as inpatient facilities and enhanced community-based crisis services.

Main duties of the job

This is a full-time permanent Consultant post which has been created as part of service restructure as Southwark CAMHS is moving towards implementation of the i-Thrive Model. It offers a unique opportunity to join an established and dynamic team of 5 Consultants in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, within South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.

The post holder will work with the CAMHS Early help team and also provide clinical input to the outreach team, including supporting the work of CAMHS clinicians working alongside Southwark Local Authority in the Clinical Justice Service and in the local secondary Pupil Referrals Unit (Southwark Inclusive Learning Service - SILS)

The service offers placements to medical students as well as Foundation, Core and Higher Trainees whilst the post holder will not be the named clinical supervisor, they will be expected to contribute to the overall support of clinical placements in the service.

The post holder will also join the Southwark CAMHS management team which comprises of senior clinicians in the service, including two non-medical consultants.

About the location:

Both Mapother House and King's College Hospital are based on or close to the Maudsley site, which is located than 5 minutes away from Denmark Hill train station (zone 2).

Person Specification

Eligibility

Essential

  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment
  • Evidence for inclusion in the Specialist Register or within six months of gaining CCT in C& A psychiatry or Equivalent training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (CESR issued by the GMC)
  • Section 12 approved
  • Approved Clinician status or able to achieve within three months of appointment


Training and Experience

Essential

  • Experience in Outpatient/Community Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
  • Experience of assessing and managing complex co-morbidities


Desirable

  • Trained in ADI and/or ADOS
  • Training in investigation of complaints and SIs
  • Experience of providing consultation to non-CAMHS practitioners and multi-agency work
  • Special interest in neurodevelopmental conditions
  • Experience and/or additional training in forensic mental health
  • Experience of paediatric liaison and crisis care


ACADEMIC SKILLS & LIFELONG LEARNING

Essential

  • Management/Audit - Participation in audit or QI in clinical posts (A) (I)
  • Teaching - Experience of teaching a range of disciplines (A)
  • Research - Involvement in research projects
  • Excellent demonstrable communication skills in English (both oral and written)
  • Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team and resolve conflict
  • Probity
  • Eligibility to work in the UK


Desirable

  • Able to plan and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training relevant to this post
  • Reflected on purpose of CPD undertaken
  • Experienced in clinical research and / or service evaluation
  • Evidence of achievement in education, research, audit and service improvement: awards, prizes, presentations and publications
  • Has led quality improvement projects/audits leading to service change or improved outcomes to patients

Qualifications

Essential

  • MRCPsych or equivalent


Desirable

  • Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists
  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management
  • Experience in other relevant specialties such as in-patient psychiatry, psychotherapy etc


Clinical skills

Essential

  • Excellent leadership skills
  • Excellent child and adolescent psychiatric assessment skills
  • Good ability to relate to children, adolescents and parents/carers
  • Good ability to work in a team setting
  • Understanding of safeguarding
  • Ability to assess capacity and consent
  • Understanding of how complaints and serious incidents are managed
  • Up-to-date knowledge and fitness to practice
  • Expertise in the use and application of The Mental Health Act in children and young people


Desirable

  • Experience of CAMHS work with younger children
  • Evidence of skills in consultation to non-mental health specialists e.g. GPs, social workers, paediatricians.
  • Evidence of range of specialist and sub-specialist experience relevant to post within NHS or comparable service
  • Expertise in CBT or other therapeutic intervention to postgraduate level
  • Significant experience of developing and leading outpatient/community CAMHS psychiatric care
  • Significant experience of crisis care
  • Expertise in the use and application of The Children Act in children and young people
