An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Paediatric Diabetes Specialist Nurse to join our team. Our service cares for approximately 250 children and young people aged 0-19 years. This role is a permanent contract covering 37.5 hours across the week and requires the successful applicant to be flexible to respond to the demands of the service. The service is based at UHCW and works within the population of Coventry and Rugby, operating over 2 hospital sites.

Main duties of the job
The role will involve providing expert advice to children and young people with diabetes and their families in both the community and hospital setting. The Paediatric Diabetes Specialist Nurse will act as a professional resource for the multi-professional team. Current experience of working with children and young people with diabetes is essential.
The successful candidate will demonstrate a keen interest in supporting and educating children, young people and families with managing diabetes from diagnosis, and will be motivated to learn. There will be a requirement for ward staff education, including delivering a mandatory training programme and supporting ward link nurses. The post will involve home visits, school support and working across two hospital sites, so ability to travel is essential.
The role involves providing advice and support during childhood and throughout the progression into our adolescent clinic for children and young people with diabetes and therefore the successful candidate must enjoy working with children and young people of all ages. They will be required to demonstrate leadership qualities, excellent communication skills and be highly motivated to work with the team to continue to develop and enhance our service.

To build professional caring relationships with children, young people with diabetes and their families and carers and be able to communicate effectively and empathetically with children and young people with diabetes and their families always taking into consideration their chronological and developmental age and cognitive ability. To support, mentor and supervise student and ward nurses, medical students and members of the multi-disciplinary team as appropriate. To support and enable children and families/carers to make informed decisions relating to their treatment and management. Utilise all local and national information and ICT systems to secure accurate and timely resource data. Accountable for own actions in accordance with the Code of Professional Conduct. Will contribute to achievement of corporate objectives, acting within local, Trust and statutory guidelines and policies at all times, including all aspects of child protection. Highly developed communication skills enabling maintenance of high quality service within a complex and challenging environment with often, conflicting targets. Demonstrates responsibility and acceptance for the provision of a high quality professional Service, promoting best practice and implementing a review process that looks at quality and efficiency and quality to meet the needs of patients and service. A resource for staff, advising on national, local and Trust policy and procedures/guidelines, ensuring that clinical governance is embedded in practice.
