The post holder supports the ward manager in the general management of the clinical environment, ensuring that a quality service is provided.

They will be responsible for the delivery of the training programme to a team of nurses, ensuring that staff within the team are supported and developed within their role.

Supporting Ward Manager to attain positive Ward Accreditation conducting one-to-one meetings with ward team to gain greater understanding and education of the fifteen standards of care, incorporating the 6Cs Compassion in Practice values. Ensuring Infection prevention standards are up held at all times.

They will be responsible for overseeing the team of nurses and healthcare assistants, monitoring their professional development through carrying out KSF appraisals.

The post holder will be a role model both clinically and professionally

Main duties of the job

Roles and Responsibility

Clinical:

Provide clinical nursing expertise and supervision for all grades of staff within the ward, to ensure a high standard of care.

Supervise the assessing, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care, thus providing high standards of patient care at all times.

Ensure that the care given reflects the hospital and departmental philosophies, standards and protocols.

Act as an effective role model and resource/advisor to colleagues, in the delivery of nursing care.

Assist the Ward Manager in facilitating the teaching, mentoring and assessment of staff and other disciplines.

Ensure that nursing practice reflects current clinical developments and is based on sound evidence.

Promote a healthy, positive and safe environment for patients and staff.

Advise patients, relatives and friends as appropriate on the promotion of health and prevention of illness.

Meet clinical objectives as agreed separately with the Ward Manager/Directorate Head Nurse.

Managerial:

Assist the Ward Manager in monitoring and appraising the performance of staff within their sphere of responsibility.

Be aware of the budgetary requirements within their clinical areas of nursing.

Professional:

Be responsible for their own development, maintaining a professional portfolio and keeping themselves updated on current nursing issues.

Will be responsible for their own actions and be bound by the NMCs Code of Professional conduct and all approved Trust policies.

Will maintain own skills and knowledge and demonstrate clinical excellence and high standards of practice to other staff.

Educational:

Help to facilitate a learning environment that is conducive to the acquisition of further skills and knowledge for all grades of staff.

Identify training needs for team members and help in the completion of training needs analysis for the unit to ensure all staff will have the opportunity for personal and professional development.

Act as role model to colleagues in the demonstration of high standards of practice by working with staff in the clinical setting.

Be actively involved in the teaching of all staff at ward and Directorate level and contribute to the development and implementation of the units training and development strategy

Will participate in the assessment of learner nurse and healthcare support nurses.

Personal responsibilities:

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Knowledge and experience of teaching techniques
  • Sound Knowledge of Infection prevention
  • Experience of supervising a range of staff
  • Prioritising care and managing patients
  • Evidence of continual professional development
  • Working knowledge of clinical governance
  • Awareness and understanding of current health and professional issues
  • An understanding of audit and research-based nursing practice
  • Knowledge and competence in Max Fax/ENT

Educations, Training and Qualifications

Essential

  • RGN for 1 years
  • Wide range of knowledge and experience in the adult setting especially ENT/ MAX FAX patients.
  • Mentorship course for students

  • Experience of providing pre and post-operative care


Skills

Essential

  • Articulate with excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Good teaching skills and a commitment to continuing the development of all staff
  • Excellent time management and prioritisation skills
  • Understanding of health education needs of patients
  • Ability to effectively deliver complex information
