TAP Deputy Sister (Lambeth Theatres)

Lambeth Theatres comprises of 6 operating theatres with array of surgical specialties (Plastics, Gynaecology-benign and oncology, Trauma, Upper GI, Lower GI, vascular, general, orthopaedics and adult cleft). We have a designated surgical admission lounge where we admit surgical patients. We also have a stage two recovery lounge with ambulatory patients and support day case discharges.

An exciting opportunity has emerged for a Band 6 Deputy Sister at Lambeth, Tower & Nuffield Theatres. In this role you will play a crucial part in shaping the Theatres Anaesthetics and Perioperative retention strategy and will have an opportunity to excel in professional development, leadership and management. All candidates applying for this position will actively participate in various clinical and non-clinical roles.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will act as a role model for junior team members in the delivery of a high standard of nursing care. They role will encompass specific responsibility for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating nursing care and expertise within the clinical area. The Deputy Sister will help lead and coordinate the clinical, managerial and educational requirements of the clinical area ensuring the highest standards of nursing practice and care are delivered as reflected by the unit philosophy. Ensuring the safety and well being of services users, and always working in a manner that promotes dignity and human rights through the adoption of person cantered care principles.

Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership and Managerial

Provide strong clinical leadership skills, supporting, energising, inspiring and empowering others in pursuit of a shared vision to ensure the effectivemanagement of the ward/department.

To assist and support the Sister/Charge Nurse in the establishment of an efficient working environment, making the most effective and efficient use of staff, supplies and services.

Co-ordinating the day-to-day management of the clinical area, delegates duties and care appropriately, whilst maintaining overall responsibility.

Ensures that staffing and skill mix is maintained, at all times, to a level that does not compromise patient safety.

Responsible for the assessment and subsequent ordering of bank and agency staff within the clinical area including being an authorised signatory for temporary staff

To be involved in the development, assessment and implementation of guidelines, protocols and pathways.

To deputise for the Sister/Charge Nurse in their absence.

To attend and participate in monthly departmental meetings and ward rounds in the absence of the Sister/Charge Nurse. To help to promote new ideas and methods for the delivery of care and assist in their implementation through liaison and co-operation with the multidisciplinary team.

To participate in the development of care pathways to promote uniformityof care.

To apply the Directorate and corporate Clinical Governance strategies to the clinical area.

Deal with complaints in a calm and courteous manner, ensuring that wherever possible complaints are dealt with efficiently and satisfactorily and resolved locally.

Support the Sister/Charge Nurse implement local initiatives within the area.

When required to be involved with managing local projects within the area.

Understand and participate in the procedure for ordering supplies as required with the agreed budget and to ensure the appropriate use of resources.Responsible for maintaining stock control e.g. controlled drugs.Authorisation to sign Bank and Agency staff time-sheets.

Person Specification

Education/ Qualifications

Essential

  • oNMC Level one Registration or recognised qualification in Operating Department Practice registered with HCPC (2)
  • oEvidence of continuing professional development


Desirable

  • oSSSA (Teaching and Assessing qualification)
  • oSuccessfully completed or working towards completing Peri-Operative post registration course
  • oEvidence of professional/clinical knowledge within the Peri-operative environment (


Skills

Essential

  • oAbility to work well within a team
  • oUp to date knowledge of current clinical and professional issues
  • oDemonstrates ability to communicate effectively
  • oUp to date IT skills


Desirable

  • oVenepuncture and Cannulation
  • oClinical skills experience within the peri-operative setting
