Three newly created posts across Barking and Dagenham , Havering and Redbridge localities. This is a unique opportunity to lead change and ensure the needs of children in care are identified and prioritised. Interviews will be held on 15th May 2024 at Trust Headquarters, CEME, Marsh Way, Rainham.

We are looking for experienced nurses who have are committed to improving the health and well-being of looked after children. You will need to have comprehensive knowledge and experience of working with children in care and wider system partnership working . The post holder will need to demonstrate a deep understanding of the health needs of looked after children and be a strong advocate for their voice to be heard.

Main duties of the job

The Named Nurse will support the implementation of service development, standard setting, clinical audit and benchmarking, to deliver needs-led evidence-based care that supports the local and national priorities for children in care.. The Named Nurse will manage the LAC nursing team and participate in the care and assessment of children who are looked after, planning their care and transition beyond care into adulthood.

The Named Nurse will also play a key role in progressing a number of projects to improve services across NELFT and work closely with key stakeholders including children who are looked after . You will work closely with locality based partnerships to work effectively to safeguard and promote the welfare of looked after children.

The post holder will have a high profile and improve the standard of Looked after Children knowledge and practice within NELFT

Starting with NELFT

NELFT place a great deal of importance on new starters being properly welcomed and inducted into the Trust. All new starters will join the Trust on the first Monday of each month and will undertake a comprehensive induction of up to two weeks which will include mandatory training, systems training and the allocation of equipment. As part of the process new starters will have the opportunity to also meet the executive team, senior managers and attend a number of drop in sessions focussing in engagement, health and wellbeing and key processes. The induction will be held at our head office in Rainham, Essex.

Probationary Period

This post will be subject to a probationary period. Internal applicants are exempt from the probationary period (unless you are an internal applicant currently part way through a probationary period or currently a bank member of staff).

High Cost Area Supplement

This post also attracts payment for High Cost Area Supplement of 15% of the basic salary (with a minimum of �4,313 to a maximum of �5,436).

Job description

Job responsibilities

The post holder will be a registered nurse and will be the strategic and operational lead within health and children social care partnership agendas for looked after children

To ensure all looked after children and young people have access to good quality health assessments with all initial assessments being carried out by a paediatrician and reviews of children being coordinated by the Looked After Children health team including children placed out of borough and those placed within the secure estate.

To lead in implementing government guidance on promoting the physical, social, mental, and emotional health of looked after children and young people through targeted health interventions including health promotion initiatives.

To work closely with other Named and Designated professionals in supporting the Trust to meet its statutory responsibilities for looked after children and young people.

To provide support and advice to colleagues in clinical assessment including quality assurance of nurse led assessments establish, monitor, and report on performance data and management process in the Trust.

Person Specification



  • Registered Nurse first level
  • Current registration with NMC
  • Have or working towards master's level degree or equivalent ability in relevant field
  • Significant experience post registration working within community health care

Experience & Knowledge


  • Have significant clinical experience of the health needs of children and young people and the health needs of looked after children
  • Current legislation and guidance in relation to Looked After Children and Safeguarding Children
  • Have a comprehensive understanding of policies and Government documents relating to the health and well- being of Children in Care.
  • Experience of interagency working
  • Audit experience
  • Undertaking Report Writing
