An exciting opportunity has arisen for a fixed term position for the Directorate Manager of Cardiology based at the Manchester Royal Infirmary, to support maternity leave cover.

The Division of Cardiac Services which is led by WTWA, delivers Cardiac services the whole of MFT supporting services across Greater Manchester and beyond. To support our expansive services and ensure we reach our strategic aims, we are looking to recruit looking to recruit an experienced and dynamic operational Directorate Manager for Cardiology, in a cross site role across Wythenshawe Hospital and Manchester Royal Infirmary at MFT.

Main duties of the job

This is a senior role responsible for leading and managing a large, complex, and diverse Directorate, which is an exciting opportunity for an individual wishing to progress their career in operational management.

You will work as part of a multi disciplinary team in conjunction with the Clinical Director, Lead Nurse and Matrons for your services as well as an engaged Divisional triumvirate team to support you.

This role incorporates both strategic and operational responsibilities with a large degree of autonomy given the cross site services that the Division provides, as such the post holder will require significant operational experience gained in an acute setting to prepare them for this.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a proven ability in managing operational performance within tight financial constraints, a strong track record of improvement skills demonstrating effective delivery of significant quality and efficiency schemes, alongside knowledge of capacity planning, and the skill of translating organisation strategy into visions and against operational objectives.

Person Specification



  • Graduate or clinical qualification relating to speciality.
  • Managerial qualification equivalent to post graduate diploma.
  • Masters Degree or equivalent experience.

Experience and Knowledge


  • Knowledge of specific area acquired through a degree or equivalent experience or training.
  • Highly specialist knowledge of managing within a NHS healthcare setting e.g. Finance, HR, project/programme management/change
  • Highly detailed knowledge and experience of managing capacity, demand and activity.
  • Knowledge of managing staff within a healthcare setting and significant experience of managing a Directorate
  • Knowledge and experience of project/programme management.
  • Proven experience of and demonstrable achievement in managing healthcare services.
  • Management of resources with a good track record with change management, efficiency savings and financial recovery plans.
  • Experience of developing and maintaining effective partnerships with stakeholders in the redesign of services.
  • Experience in clinical audit/benchmarking.
  • Experienced in complaints management
  • Evidence of continuous professional development.
  • Experience of identifying education and training needs of staff utilising.
  • Evidence of professional leadership, leading to innovation in practice
  • Experience of successfully managing the implementation of change.
  • Measurable track record in involving and motivating staff to improve performance
  • Experience of managing a diverse team
