Main duties of the job

  • To provide a 7-day service to patients needing specialist assessment and treatment in order to facilitate a safe and timely discharge from community hospital
  • Under supervision of the Clinical Team Lead and in conjunction with Physiotherapy Colleagues, to be responsible for the continued development of the inpatient therapy within Brixham community hospital.
  • To provide clinical assessment and treatment for patients identified as having therapy needs, within Medical/Surgical/Emergency Services.
  • To explore innovative new ways of delivering acute patient services to facilitate speedier discharges from Hospital and participate in implementing and evaluating changes to the service.
  • To develop links with community-based services and Intermediate Care teams to ensure a continuous intervention.
  • To ensure holistic patient assessment including the physical, emotional and psychosocial needs of the individual.
  • To plan, implement and evaluate treatment programs for patients with a wide variety of medical conditions in liaison with multi-disciplinary teams, families, carers and other agencies.


About us

We are a small and friendly team of Occupational Therapists who are integrated within a wider team of Physiotherapists and Rehabilitation Support Workers covering 20 inpatient medical beds at Brixham Community hospital. We have excellent leadership and support from our senior members of the team including a Head of Occupational Therapy Services/Principle Occupational Therapist, together with an Inpatient Therapy Manager. We strongly believe in a 'What matters to me' approach and are patient centred. We have a high profile and are well respected with our MDT colleagues. Job responsibilities

  • Diploma/Degree in Occupational Therapy.
  • Valid state registration with HealthProfessions Council.
  • Experience within the NHS includingexperience working in a variety of roles.
  • Have a minimum of 18 months experiencewithin the NHS including experience workingin a variety of roles both in the acute andcommunity settings.
  • Knowledge of National Service Frameworks.
  • Evidence of continuing professionaldevelopment .
  • Experience of working with complex andchronic conditions.
  • Therapeutic and manual handling skills.
  • Ability to work autonomously and take aleadership role.
  • To undertake home/environmental visits .
  • There is a requirement to complete Moving and Handling Assessments with patients and completedaily moving and handling practice as part of inpatient rehab. You will need to be able to usemoving and handling equipment and transport equipment where and when required.
  • The hospital setting is a busy environment with a high case load and fast patient flow.
  • At times you will be working with patients who do not have good outcomes which can be emotionallyupsetting. You may be required to deliver bad news or deal with conflict at times, which can beemotionally demanding. You may work with patients and their support networks who have conflictingopinions, which can be emotionally demanding.
  • Carrying a high and often complex caseload will require a lot of mental effort.

Qualifications and training

Essential

  • Diploma/Degree in Occupational Therapy

  • CPD portfolio and evidence of recent post-graduate learning relevant to area of clinical practice
  • Experience within the NHS including experience working in a variety of roles
