The Acute Medical Unit is a 24 bedded mixed specialty ward which admits patients from the Emergency Department (ED). All medical specialities are admitted through the unit unless speciality bed is required and available from ED on occasion we admit some surgical and orthopaedic patients depending on demand.

As a Band 6 junior sister/ charge nurse Clinical Educator you will be responsible for promoting and implementing practice conducive to the development of high quality patient care, by providing education and support to junior staff members and HCA's.

A strong clinical background in acute general medicine is essential to this role to support the nursing team and ensure our patients receive the right standard of care.

Main duties of the job

AMU are looking for an experienced B5 , the successful candidate will be expected to take on the daily oversight and ward management in the absence of the Ward Sister.

You will:
  • have responsibility for assessment, implementation and of monitoring standards of patient care
  • monitor and support staff training and education for the team.
  • carry out risk management, report & share learning with team members.
  • have an understanding of budget control including an awareness of efficient use of both human and consumable resources and equipment.
  • have a good knowledge and the ability to manage patient flow, ensuring that patients are admitted and discharged to and from AMU in a timely manner to maximise emergency flow from ED and prompt specialist care where needed.
  • need to be able to adapt quickly to changing situations in terms of managing acutely unwell patients, encouraging timely escalation and management of the deteriorating patient.
  • ensure that the shift team you are managing are caring for patients to the highest standards and you will have oversight of all patients within the unit to provide assurance to the ward manager.

  • Previous experience within relevant clinical area
  • Proven experience and achievements at Band 5 or equivalent
