Coordinating and implementing the in-service training and continuing professional education of nursing staff within the Surgical wards

To support, implement and evaluate programmes of education and training at an appropriate level and to promote and maintain standards of care in accordance with Trust standard operating procedures and policies.

Supporting the development of evidenced-based practice on Surgical wards disseminating best practice and incorporating identified educational needs.

To provide support and development for all grades of nursing staff in clinical practice, through the medium of education and training and maintain a database of staff development with the support of the B7. To maintain a noticeable clinical presence, enabling staff to achieve their professional objectives. To facilitate staff retention by ensuring clinical support, progressive job satisfaction and opportunities for staff personal development.

Main duties of the job

With the guidance of a Band 7-line manager and T/O matron- to create, develop and maintain an effective learning environment in clinical practice.
  • To support the development and utilisation of staff development programs.
  • To be responsible, in some clinical teaching situations, for the provision of care and safety of the patient
  • Assist staff in their role in the development, implementation and evaluation of clinical competencies and advancing practice.
  • To be an expert in the area of T/O nursing, maintain professional competence and act as a role model for staff in relation to best practice and delivery of patient care.
  • With an evidenced based approach, develop standards of care for T/O nursing.
  • To positively influence staff retention by providing support, education and development, for all staff
  • Support the development of in-house education programmes for all staff groups and explore where appropriate, accreditation of in-house programmes.
  • Actively promote the use of evidenced based practice within educational programmes, promoting awareness of research issues. Encourage fellow professionals to continually review their practice and apply new research in the improvements of patient care. Encourage collaboration with the multidisciplinary teams within surgery and the Trust

  • Support your line manager, following discussion with the Matron, Education Lead, and Divisional Management Team, in planning an appropriate strategic development of training. Identify priorities for training over a 12-month, 3-year and 5-year time span based on the educational strat
  • To contribute effectively to education and development of staff within the T/O wards, the Division and Trust, where identified
  • To help lead, support and inspire colleagues, coaching and teaching all bands of staff to raise understanding, standards of professionalism and contribute to the development of clinical practice, improving standards and quality.
  • Participate in the teaching and delivery of training programmes and facilitate their further development

Person Specification

Qualification and training

Essential

  • 1st Level Registration


Desirable

  • Post Registration Diploma or Degree in a related subject
  • Teaching & Assessment Diploma or Degree
  • PGCE
  • Master's Degree


Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • 2 years minimum experience as a registered nurse within Surgical Nursing
  • Evidence of an informal and formal teaching role
  • Portfolio of continuing professional development
  • Evidence of recent and continued formal and informal teaching experience
  • To have current knowledge of Adult Surgical & T/O Nursing


Desirable

  • Evidence of research and audit participation
  • Experience of developing education training packages
  • Experience as a clinical supervisor
  • Able to understand the education training needs of the area and its staff
  • Knowledge of current changes within the NHS and nurse education
  • Broad knowledge of the framework for pre and post registration education in UK and Europe


Skills and Abilities

Essential

  • Able to undertake and deliver presentations
  • Able to develop and enhance Surgical Nursing Care education/training packages for all surgical nursing staff
  • Innovative and able to create a variety of learning opportunities for staff within Services
  • Able to manage databases with a working knowledge of I.T.
  • Committed, supportive, enthusiastic and innovative within the development of T/O nursing and education
  • Good organisational skills
