Job Details

There is an opportunity available for interested staff to second on a temporary basis to care for a young adult (18) with learning disabilities, autism and complex PTSD. The young adult is residing on Pegasus Ward, Junction 17.

This young adult has had extremely difficult prior experiences of care and needs a consistent, inquisitive, caring and contained group of staff to allow her to feel safe and to make the progress she needs to move on.

This opportunity is available for experienced qualified nurses, we would very much welcome applicants who have knowledge and experience of working with people with learning disabilities but would also encourage people who would like to develop their expertise in this area to get in touch.

As a trust GMMH does not have a specific inpatient setting for Learning disabilities so opportunities to gain experience working within this specialty are rare.

Main duties of the job

Staff would need to be PMVA trained as there is an ongoing risk of violent & aggressive behaviours. You would need to value the importance of therapeutic relationships and feel confident in your abilities to build rapport and de-escalate with that relationship at the heart of this.

There is a comprehensive Positive Behavioural Support Plan in place co-developed by our colleagues in the children's learning disabilities intensive support team. This secondment would allow the opportunity for staff to gain more experience in this model and to contribute to ongoing review of the plans.

A typical day on the ward would involve supporting the young person to attend to getting washed and dressed and planning for their day. They have therapeutic sessions provided by different members of the MDT and 3 school lessons a day. Sometimes they value you getting involved in these with them. There is close attention paid to balancing stimulating and calming activities in line with a comprehensive sensory profile.
