Straight to test Colorectal Cancer and Non-Specific Symptoms CNS

Hours: 37.5 hours per week, all MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working)

An opportunity has arisen for a Nurse Specialist to join our Colorectal straight to test and Non-Specific Symptoms team working alongside our Advanced Clinical practitioner in Colorectal Cancer to further develop the service. The service enables rapid access to diagnostics for cancer referrals and works towards the compliance of the 28-day target from referral to diagnosis.

We are looking for an experienced Registered Nurse with demonstrable clinical experience within this field who is able to function well in a team as well as under their own initiative and who can respond to changing service priorities with this patient group

You will deliver and support high standards of clinical care both as a direct care giver and indirectly through the support and education of the wider workforce.

This rapidly expanding modern and busy unit offers many training opportunities for their staff, recent developments have led to the opening of a new cancer centre onsite and development of a new radiotherapy centre due to open late 2024.This developing service is supported by a forward thinking & supportive Management Team, Nurse Practitioners, Palliative Care Team & Macmillan Information and Support Centre.

Opportunities to develop both clinical & managerial skills & for further study.

Main duties of the job

  • To assist and support the development of Nurse led Straight to Test (STT) and Non-Specific Symptom (NSS) triage, diagnostic referrals, diagnostic results and patient information.
  • To assist and support the development of open access diagnostic colorectal service and 28day cancer target.
  • To be an effective core member of the site-specific MDT with responsibilities reflected in the relevant NICE Improving Outcomes Guidance and National Cancer Quality Measures.

Person Specification

Qualifications and knowledge


  • Registered General Nurse
  • Degree or Diploma
  • ENB 998 or similar teaching qualification


  • Colorectal / cancer module
  • Master's degree or equivalent experience/training
  • Independent nurse prescriber or working towards
  • Advanced communication skills training



  • Relevant experience at band 6 in Colorectal/cancer care
  • Experience of leading and developing clinical practice



  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent management skills of self and others
  • Have a good insight into self on others and vice versa
  • Ability to facilitate the management of change
  • Ability to delegate appropriately
