Are you an experienced Speech and Language Therapist who loves voice work? We are looking for a Speech and Language Therapist with a passion for delivering the highest quality of specialist care to adults.

This is your opportunity to come to work in this picturesque, vibrant county whilst doing your dream job. We have 15 hours a week (0.4wte substantive) at band 7 specialising in voice ready for you to apply for. In addition, we have a 1 year fixed term opportunity to work in our Head and Neck team, due to maternity leave, if this is also of interest.

We are an acute and community SLT team with drive and enthusiasm to make a difference to the people we serve and always striving to improve.

Coming to join us you will have support from SLT and ENT colleagues with regular supervision and excellent training opportunities as well as encouragement to take on service development projects.

The role includes a monthly voice clinic with an ENT consultant using videostroboscopy to help define more severe or persistent voice problems. You will be responsible for leading the SLT team in the recognition of ENT related difficulties and support colleagues to continually develop and grow their own skills.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide specialist SLT services to people referred from the ENT department who have communication, voice and / or swallowing difficulties.
  • To work collaboratively with ENT Consultant within GHNHSFT to provide joint Voice Clinic services.
  • To provide second opinions to other SLT colleagues in specialist area.
  • To act as a Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist within the Adult Physical Health Speech and Language Therapy Team, supporting the team to evolve and embed best practice in the field of Communication, Voice and Swallowing Disorders in the field of ENT.
  • To independently manage a highly specialist and complex caseload. Including screening, in depth assessment, differential diagnosis, treatment, monitoring and review of adults with acute, chronic and complex acquired disorders of swallowing, voice and communication.
  • To manage and prioritise own clinical workload as appropriate, working efficiently to manage professional time and delegate according to competency levels of other therapists.
  • Collaborate with the wider multi-disciplinary team (MDT) to provide targeted management and rehabilitation for patients.
  • To supervise SLT assistants, newly qualified and experienced SLTs.
  • To work autonomously within Gloucestershire Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust (GHC) policies and professional practice maintaining accurate and comprehensive electronic records.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Recognised Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists (RCSLT) degree level qualification
  • Member of Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
  • Registered with the RCSLT
  • Post graduate qualification in dysphagia management at Masters level or equivalent


Length of or nature of experience

Essential

  • Have a high level of specialist knowledge and clinical skills of Voice acquired from post graduate study and in-depth clinical experience.
  • Competent to work with people with dysphagia.
  • Experience and evidence of training speech and language therapists and other professionals
  • Experience and evidence of supervising staff and students e.g. supervision, appraisals, performance management
  • Skills in differential diagnosis and ability to offer second opinions
  • Highly developed auditory and perceptual skills in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients


Desirable

  • Experience in Videofluroscopy, Tracheostomy or FEES
  • Experience of quality improvement
  • Experience of clinical research


PROFESSIONAL / MANAGERIAL / SPECIALIST KNOWLEDGE

Essential

  • Demonstrate experience in the assessment treatment and evaluation of swallowing, voice and communication disorders of various aetiologies, including those with complex presentations.
  • Demonstration of specialist knowledge in clinical specialism, underpinned by current evidence-based practice.
  • Can demonstrate a proven track record of audit and/or research
  • Knowledge of a broad range of specialist formal and informal assessment methods and their interpretation
  • Skill in selection of appropriate strategies for prioritisation and management of a complex caseload independently
  • Awareness of national policies and procedures relevant to health care and this specialist SLT caseload
  • Ability to deal with complaints in accordance to Trust protocol
  • Commitment to ongoing training, education and mentoring to develop clinical skills

  • Experience of managing a team
  • Highly motivated and able to evidence effective leadership skills
