Main duties of the job

The Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust is seeking two full-time sonographers. The post holder will be a leader and advanced practitioner that champions and will set an example on delivering of world class care. The post holder will act as a Clinical Lead Sonographer for obstetrics and be responsible for managing and upholding a safe and effective obstetric ultrasound imaging service. They will work autonomously at an Advanced Practice Level or equivalent level to the FMU Consultants with an expectation that they will spend 30% of their time scanning in their area of expertise with the remaining 20% spread across other ultrasound subspecialties. For the remaining 50 %, the post holder will join the current ultrasound leadership team and take responsibility for management of the ultrasound service.

The post-holder will possess a Post-graduate qualification in the area of expertise at Masters Level or equivalent or working towards, and uphold HCPC or equivalent registration with appropriate CASE accreditation qualification. The post holder will be an experienced and proficient obstetrics sonographer.

They will support the operational manager and other ultrasound leads in developing the ultrasound service in line with best practice and national standards.

Education & Qualifications


  • DCR or BSc diploma/degree or equivalent
  • PGDip in medical ultrasound / DMU equivalent
  • Evidence of CPD
  • HCPC or relevant professional registration



  • Significant experience of working at a band 8a level
  • Experience of working with clinical leads in specialist areas to develop services
  • Experience of working with a multi-disciplinary team
  • Experience across majority of main areas of US including obstetrics/gynaecology, abdominal, small parts, MSK, breast, vascular

Skills and aptitudes


  • Demonstrates the ability to lead and work as part of a team
  • Ability to teach and mentor students
  • Track record of audit and presentation of audit findings within a team
  • Patient and safety focused
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a multidisciplinary team, including Consultants, Sonographers, Midwives, GP's , Nurses and other Health care workers when discussing patient management
  • Possess a full understanding of ethical and moral issues to enable delivery of highly sensitive and at times distressing information to the patients in appropriate /empathetic manner
  • An understanding of local and national guidance relevant to medical ultrasound
  • Ability to cope with work pressures and manage time effectively
  • Ability to make prompt decisions based on knowledge, experience and circumstances
  • Ability to work autonomously and within a team
  • Demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills
