The Deputy Director of Finance is a key leadership role in the finance function, supporting the delivery of the Trust's strategic goals, with a particular focus on technical accounting, investments and governance.

Main duties of the job

The Deputy Director of Finance - Technical and Developments reports into the Director of Finance and will play a critical role in the successful delivery of the Trust's strategic and operational finance objectives.

Some key responsibilities for this role include:
  • Support the Director of Finance in providing Board-level and external advice, developing strategies and plans to ensure the Trust's continued viability.
  • Ensuring the rigorous scrutiny of strategic capital and revenue business cases, and support successful delivery of these cases.
  • Responsibility for the preparation and delivery of the audited annual accounts.
  • Responsibility for the coordination, management and reporting of financial services, including treasury management function, and capital.
  • Ensuring an effective system of financial governance and oversight of financial decision making.

The successful candidate must be a robust, credible, professionally qualified accountant with exemplary leadership skills, high standards and the ability to influence executive teams and other organisational leaders. You must have experience leading sizeable teams and be comfortable managing the overall financial control of the organisation. Your significant post-qualification experience will have been gained within a large, complex and public sector organisation as an experienced and inspiring leader. Having experience from an audit or a regulatory organisation will be advantageous.

Qualifications

Essential

  • oUndergraduate degree
  • oQualified relevant finance qualification (e.g. ACA, CIMA, CIPFA, ACCA)
  • oRegistered and active continued professional development
  • oEducated to Masters level, equivalent post-graduate qualification or equivalent level of experience


Desirable

  • oExpert specialist knowledge of accounting procedures, in particular those specifically relating to the NHS


Physical Skills

Essential

  • oAdvanced keyboard skills, including expert spreadsheet modelling


Knowledge

Essential

  • oKnowledge of financial management in a healthcare or commercial environment, and of the implications of the changing financial regime in the NHS
  • oKnowledge of the NHS financial regime and its application to an NHS Foundation Trust
  • oKnowledge of the NHS Business Case process and experience of operating this system for developing cases
  • oKnowledge of NHS performance reporting and performance management
  • oWorking knowledge of general ledger systems and associated software

  • oKnowledge of National Tariff Payment System, Payment by Results and NHS Contracting
