The Deputy Head of Patient Safety will lead the Patient Safety Systems and Patient Safety Review Team for the Trust, providing dynamic leadership and expert support to the patient safety agenda. The post holder will support the Patient Safety Specialised with the implementation of the National Patient Safety Framework in the Trust.

Main duties of the job

- Utilising specialist knowledge and experience the post holder will be Trust point of contact for providing specialist information and support relating to patient safety systems.

- Using a variety of negotiating, persuasive, motivational and reassurance skills the post holder will work with a wide range of clinical staff and managers at all levels, communicating service-related information to senior managers, staff, patients, families and external agencies.

Job responsibilities

Managing and leading the Patient Safety department, the post holder will be directly accountable for the delivery of the Patient Safety Systems department functions.The post holder will deputise for and support the Patient Safety Specialist in the development and implementation of relevant strategy and policy to meet national NHS agenda, contracting requirements and organisational priorities relating to incident and serious incident management.The post holder is responsible for ensuring that there are robust data and audit systems in place to support effective data capture and analysis of information.

Person Specification



  • Educated to masters level in relevant subject or equivalent experience.
  • Management Qualification or evidence of equivalent experience / training.
  • Lead by example, promoting the highest standards of personal and professional conduct, integrity and probity.
  • Previous and demonstrable line management experience.
  • Extensive, significant and in-depth knowledge and understanding of NHS policies, regulations and guidance relating to Patient Safety.
  • Extensive, significant and in-depth experience in working in the field of Patient Safety and managing Patient safety Systems.
  • Sound knowledge of range of mental health and learning disability services.
  • Significant experience effectively engaging with patients/service users and carers.
  • Able to analyse, triangulate and interpret information of varying complexity and present it in a comprehensive and professional manner
  • Ability to evaluate evidence and make reasoned independent decisions.
  • Experience of working positively with staff and the public, and an ability to work with different cultures, expectations and priorities.
  • Demonstrable ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships across the Trust and externally, working positively with staff and the public, and an ability to work with different cultures, expectations and priorities.


  • Quality Improvement qualification for example QSIR.
  • Project management qualifications
