An exciting opportunity has arisen for a General Manager to join our senior management team within the CAMHS National and Specialist Inpatient Service. This role would ideally suit those looking to take the next step in their career and provides an opportunity to work alongside an experienced and supportive team of professional leads to further develop the service we offer to children and young people.

You will work closely with the CAMHS Deputy Director and Head of Nursing & Quality, and inpatient senior managers to ensure our staff and services deliver outstanding care to the children and young people on our wards and achieve the Trust objectives.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for an experienced motivated and committed manager with strong communication and leadership skills. An essential requirement is the ability to manage self, teams and systems in at times highly pressured situations whilst keeping the young person at the heart of everything we do.

Reporting to the Deputy Director you will oversee three child and adolescent inpatient wards.

The General Manager will be required to:
  • Provide operational management of our inpatient wards ensuring clinical and performance standards are achieved.
  • Manage the effective and efficient delivery of services within the resources available whilst maintaining the quality of service provision.
  • Take a lead role in developing our inpatient services to meet future requirements and liaise with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders to ensure their views are incorporated in the service design.
  • Work closely with the professional leads and as a member of the senior leadership team to provide demonstrable assurance that the quality of the clinical services including patient safety, patient satisfaction and clinical outcomes meet the required high standards.

The role requires strong compassionate leadership, working closely with staff, young people and families/ carers.

Bethlem Royal Hospital

Bethlem Royal Hospital is based in a beautiful setting in over 200 acres of green space in the London Borough of Bromley, South East London. The hospital has easy access to nearby main roads and have offers free parking. The site is within walking distance from of Eden Park and West Wickham overland stations.

The postholder will be expected to work across the three inpatient wards. Snowfields Adolescent Unit is located at Denmark Hill. Bethlem Adolescent Unit, and Bethlem Adolescent PICU Unit are located on the Bethlem Hospital Site in Beckenham.

The General Manager of CAMHS National and Specialist Inpatient Services will be responsible for two General Adolescent Wards and one Adolescent Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) from Maudsley and Bethlem Hospital sites.

Working closely with colleagues, the General Manager will ensure excellent clinical, operational and financial outcomes. The post-holder will be expected to work as part of a senior management team with other managers, matrons, Deputy Directors, Head of Nursing & Quality and Service Director amongst others.

The post-holder will also have a key role in liaising with commissioners including NHSE and the South London Partnership (SLP) Provider Collaborative. They will also be responsible for developing any new services and leading on at least one area of strategic priority.

Person Specification

Education / Qualification


  • Recognised Professional Qualification in Social Work (DipSW/CQSW), Mental Health Nursing (RMN), Psychology or any allied health/medical profession.
  • Masters level education in a relevant subject or equivalent post-graduate experience
  • Live Registration


  • Management course



  • Specialist clinical knowledge relevant to the service, including evidence based practice.
  • Working knowledge of all relevant legislation associated with health and social care.



  • Senior Management Experience in running a large number of multidisciplinary teams with significant clinical and business delivery targets.
  • Experience of managing budgets and resources effectively
  • Experience of recruitment and selection of staff.


  • Experience of project management.
  • Experience of working with young people

Skills and Abilities


  • Effective communications and interpersonal skills and proven ability to develop and manage key relationships at all levels
  • Excellent report writing and presentation skills and proven ability to evaluate services and present findings to stakeholders
  • Leadership skills especially the ability to lead and manage change through influence without direct management
