The Orthopaedic Outpatient Department have a vacancy for a full time Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse with at least 2 years current nursing care experience in an elective or trauma orthopaedic setting.

The post is available full time - 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday. The shift pattern is currently over four long days (8-6pm three days per week and one shift of 8-5.30pm) but flexibility can be offered over four and a half days as an alternative.

The post holder will act as a positive role model, promote effective teamwork and encourage continuous development in the department. We would require the successful candidate to support the clinical outpatient area, alongside our trust wide Plaster Room Suite in managing and leading the team (alongside the Band 7 Senior Sister) in maintaining a standard of excellence in the care we deliver to our patients and support to our colleagues.

The work is stimulating, varied and challenging, and the ideal candidate should be a team focused member of staff who enjoys providing excellent patient care and has a passionate approach to their work. You must have excellent communication skills, sound customer care knowledge and an empathetic and calming approach.

Main duties of the job

This post is to support the current band 7 who works part time. In the absence of the Band 7, the Band 6 will support and be involved in the key areas below and will have the following skills:

Ability to co-ordinate the department and the team and manage non-clinical duties like sickness and appraisals.

Ability to assess patients, plan care for a group of patients, deliver care and evaluate the effectiveness of care given.

Good analytical skills for assessing and interpretingacute and other complex patient conditions, recognize deterioration and take appropriate action.

Good organisational and time management skills

Ability to develop professional relationships

Leadership skills including good interpersonal and communication skills.

IT skills

Ability to think creatively and contribute to service improvement initiatives

The band 6 will support and be involved in the key areas below:
  • Retention and recruitment as required of a nursing workforce qualified to meet the needs of the patient in outpatients. You will advise on the level of nursing care and skill-mix for the department, and assist in re-profiling where necessary to improve patient care
  • Ensure the appropriate management of staff performance, conduct and sickness is in line with Trust Policy, keeping records up to date.
  • Ensure that all staff in the area undergo an annual appraisal and have a personal development plan.

  • Educated to diploma/degree or equivalent level of education, training or experience in Nursing
  • Registered Nurse with the NMC
  • Teaching/Assessing qualification
  • Leadership/management course or experience
  • At least two years' experience of working in an Orthopaedic setting


  • Able to multi-task and prioritise workload effectively
  • Be able to work at a fast pace in a job that can be physically demanding
  • Excellent Communication and Prioritisation Skills
