Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust are seeking to recruit an interim Microbiology Pathology Services Manager to provide managerial and professional leadership to the Microbiology department within the directorate of Pathology. This post will be a secondment for three to six months to provide essential leadership to the department whilst we seek to recruit substantively to the post.

This is a very exciting time to join us as we move forwards to support the WYAAT pathology network strategy and create a new pathology partnership between CHFT, MYTT and LTHT. We are working with our regional partners as part of the North 2 West Yorkshire Pathology network and are in the process of implementing a new Laboratory Information System. Currently the department processes over 525,000 tests per year covering microbiology, virology and serology from the acute hospital setting and direct access work. All microbiology services are located within Calderdale Royal Hospital.

Main duties of the job

Key aspects of the role are to:

o To provide day to day operational leadership and management of Microbiology.

o To ensure the delivery of the highest quality patient care through the provision of excellent laboratory services across the Trust.

o To be responsible for the budgetary management of the department and to deliver services in line with the financial plan.

o To maintain accreditation and regulatory compliance in all areas of the business (e.g. UKAS ISO 15189, CQC).

o To be an integral member of the pathology management team, deputising for the general manager when required. The successful applicant will have: o Extensive, recent Microbiology knowledge

o Excellent Leadership Skills

o Successfully contributed to the UKAS accreditation standard

o Experience in service development and change management

o An ability to develop and motivate staff.

o A well organised, calm approach is essential with the ability to adapt in a changing environment

Job responsibilities

As Service lead you will be responsible for the development and delivery of a quality and effective Laboratory. You will take a lead on the development of service plans challenging existing practices, ensuring progressive solutions, which take into account models of best practice, are incorporated.

You will ensure that all income required to support delivery of the service is identified and that budgets to deliver this are realistic.

You will work closely with the General Manager, clinicians and services in other parts of the Trust to ensure delivery plans are compatible and to maximise opportunities for more efficient ways of working. Supporting Clinicians to re-design services that deliver improved clinical outcomes for patients, reduced waiting times and more efficient use of resources.

Person Specification

Qualifications/ Training


  • Educated to Degree level or equivalent
  • Registered with the HCPC
  • Hold Fellowship of the Institute of Biomedical Science
  • Hold a Management Qualification or demonstrate equivalent experience
  • Extensive relevant CPD


  • Hold Chartered Scientist (CSci) status with the Science Council
