A new and exciting opportunity has arisen for a full time Clinical Librarian to join Worcestershire Health Libraries. We are a small, innovative, and friendly team seeking an enthusiastic and professional member of staff. We have four sites across Worcestershire and a team of ten staff

You will work alongside the Outreach Librarian (currently vacant) delivering an evidence based service embedding the role into clinical and non-clinical teams

You will work across the Worcestershire health economy working with multiple organisations

Main duties of the job

You will be based at Alexandra Hospital

You will work closely with the Outreach Librarian to deliver an evidence service, training programs and inductions, as well as oversee the site.

You will also support the Outreach Librarian and be part of the outreach team developing innovations and induction services, as well as working on new electronic services

Job description

Job responsibilities

Job Purpose:

The post will play a vital role in the provision of quality filtered and evaluated research evidence directly to health professionals to support decision making and will support evidence-based practice, teaching, learning, continuing professional development and research.

The post holder will be responsible for the development of a Clinical Librarian Service and the delivery of expert searches, targeted current awareness and critical appraisal services. Similar services will be developed for senior managerial, procurement and commissioning staff.

The post holder will utilise highly developed appraisal skills to select and evaluate relevant information for users

The post holder will work closely with the aims and objectives of the Research Faculity

The role will involve the development of training programmes in evidence-based information seeking and the delivery of these programmes.

The role will also involve the procurement of books and e-books for the whole service ensuring relevant and up to date stock

The post holder will oversee and manage the site and staff at Redditch Health Library, currently consisting of two paraprofessional staff

Key Duties:

Clinical Librarian services

Responsible for the development and management of a clinical librarian service including the delivery of expert searches, targeted current awareness and critical appraisal services for clinical, senior managerial and commissioning staff. This involves:

oWorking as a member of selected multi-disciplinary trust-wide clinical teams to provide highly specific, patient centred and evaluated information at the time and place of need

oWorking with Research Faculity

oUsing critical appraisal skills to select and evaluate relevant information, and expert knowledge of searching online databases to perform mediated literature searches

oExamining how the information provided is disseminated within departments and auditing how the clinical team acts upon the information.

Develop proactive anticipatory alerting and professional updating services such as production of electronic current awareness bulletins and supply of contents tables to maintain users awareness of current developments in their field.

Effectively market and promote services to users, undertaking research into service development as required, monitoring the effectiveness of initiatives using both qualitative and qualitative measuring techniques, e.g. audits, surveys, focus group meetings, and producing reports.

Establish and maintain internet and intranet pages to publicise and provide access to training services provided.

In conjunction with colleagues, investigate the possibilities of using new technology in enhancing access to the knowledge base.

Develop other specialist services with business partners e.g. Procurement, commissioning groups and operational procedures.

Conduct surveys to determine user needs according to policies and procedures.

Demonstrate the impact of the clinical librarian service in order to secure ongoing funding for the role. This will involve identifying a varied and effective selection of performance indicators, in consultation with clinical staff, and collecting the relevant data.

Provide quarterly statistics and progress reports on the clinical librarian service to the Library Services & Knowledge Manager and relevant stakeholders.

Ensure that the Worcestershire Health Libraries intranet pages are maintained and developed over all participating Trust intranets.

Provision of User Training and other Evidence-based Services

Provide evidence-based literature searches accompanied by :

oA summary of the results listing the databases searched and highlighting the evidence found

oFull text articles when appropriate.

Develop, promote and deliver user training programmes in evidence based information seeking, literature searching and critical appraisal

Develop, promote and deliver induction programmes to all staff and students, to complement Trust induction programmes.

Assist in organising print and electronic knowledge resources using nationally recognised professional cataloguing and indexing techniques to ensure effective information retrieval. This includes developing taxonomies for electronic document management.

Assist with the NCRS Registration Authority for Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust. In the registration and issuing of smartcards.

Staff Management

Manage the workload of the paraprofessional staff, delegating and overseeing tasks according to agreed measures.

Contribute to the Departments training and development programme.

Ensure all Knowledge Management staff are appropriately trained in literature searching, current awareness, critical appraisal and any proposed service developments.

The post holder will deputise in the LKS Managers absence

The post holder will oversee and manage the site and staff at Redditch Health Library

Site and Resource Management

Manage the working environment at Redditch Health Library by

oEnsuring library is staffed during core hours and maintaining rota

oEnsuring library is clean and meets social distancing measures

oMaintain Library stock and resources

oEnsure all health and safety standards are maintained

oMaintain site to health and safety and other relevant legislation specific to libraries.

The postholder is responsible for the stock selection and purchase of books and e-books across all three sites. This includes

oLiaising with clinical staff and teams on stock selection

oMaintaining current stock and purchasing new stock

oUsing the requisition software and keeping within budget

oCataloguing and delegation of appropriate tasks

oDistribution of collections across three sites evenly and fairly

oPromotion of books and collections

Personal development

Responsible for maintaining own professional competence through CPD activities and maintaining a portfolio which reflects personal development.

Participates in the staff personal development scheme as an appraiser and an appraisee, and is responsible for complying with an agreed personal development plan.

Attends conferences, workshops and seminars run by professional organisations such as CILIP and Health Library Groups regionally and nationally to share best practice and maintain awareness of current developments and changing technologies in health and social care librarianship and knowledge management and the information and communications industry locally, nationally and internationally. Cascades learning to the Worcestershire Knowledge Management Team.

Keeps up to date with developments within the NHS and social care services locally and nationally by attending meetings, reading NHS publications and joining e-conferences.

Mandatory training for Registration Authority Agents is required and attendance at relevant update training will be encouraged where appropriate.

Maintain own well-being and teams with support available.

Person Specification



  • At least 5 years recent post-qualification experience in a health, academic or special library
  • At least 2 years successful record of staff management leading, motivating, delegating and monitoring staff.
  • Experience of stock procurement and management
  • Experience of working with Koha or similar electronic library management system.
  • Responding to and managing change


  • Experience of budget and financial planning and management.
  • Experience of marketing and promotion of Library services



  • Degree in library & information science or first degree in any subject plus postgraduate diploma/professional qualification in librarianship, information science or related discipline.
  • Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals or equivalent experience and expertise
  • European Computer Driving Licence or equivalent
  • Evidence of continuing professional development


  • Masters degree and professional qualification in librarianship, information science or related discipline
