An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experience and motivated leader to join the Division of Medicine at Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust in the role of Matron for Acute Services. The successful applicant will be an experienced registered nurse with a positive leadership style. We are seeking a confident and motivated senior nurse with up to date nursing knowledge and experience to lead. You must have sound clinical skills, good IT skills, excellent communication skills, be flexible, a team player, and able to use your initiative to lead a team and deliver high quality patient care across the division.

You will be supported by a senior clinical and management team to deliver high quality patient safety and patient experience. One of the other key elements of the role is to provide positive leadership to the clinical team and act as a role model for staff and develop the team.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be a member of the Divisional Management Team, working effectively with fellow Matrons, General Managers and Clinical Directors to deliver quality services for patients, efficiently. There is a specific focus on visible, accessible, and strong clinical leadership service quality and development and the patient's experience of safe, timely and effective care.

Job responsibilities

To work corporately to ensure the most appropriate clinical management of patients.*To facilitate and lead in a positive, flexible and strategic manner.*Set and monitor clinical and non-clinical standards as and when required, take action to ensure high quality patient focus service in line with operational plan.*Working in partnership with Ward Sisters/Charge Nurses, ensure the delivery of quality care.*To present a dynamic, innovative and enthusiastic role model providing leadership, guidance and advice on both operational and professional issues.

Person Specification



  • Registered RGN or equivalent Degree level study or equivalent.
  • Masters level qualification in relevant speciality or equivalent qualifications or knowledge
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development in specialist field of practice
  • Adult Teaching/assessment qualification (e.g. 998


  • Qualifications in relevant specialty



  • Recent operational management experience and demonstrable clinical experience.
  • Involvement with clinical networks/patient pathways within the Trust.
  • Clinical benchmarking beyond own organisation.


  • Project work outside own organisation
  • Involvement with a modernisation/improvement project.
  • Evidence of working at a senior strategic level

Special Knowledge/Expertise


  • Competent in development and delivery of programmes of care
  • Ability to performance manage against Trust targets
  • Understanding the principles and processes of Service Change
  • Ability to understand the national, regional and local policy context and effect its implications for service development and delivery.
  • Skilled in effective Public and Patient Involvement.
  • An in depth understanding and experience of patient flow/strategic bed management across the health economy


  • Transferability and flexibility to adapt skills base to deliver outside the sphere of previous experience.
