Maple ward is a 20 bedded ring fenced elective orthopaedic ward. This is an excellent opportunity to join our team which also practices enhance recovery.

We aim to deliver the highest standard of care to our patients whilst maintaining a high level of customer service. The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate that you have a firm understanding of the role of a registered nurse (band 5). Having a direct experience of orthopaedic patients and enhance care would put you at an advantage. However, we are expanding and we would also consider other experiences such as surgery, acute medicine or CCU. We'd also consider applications from student nurses, considering that you will qualify within 12 weeks.

If you are the successful candidate we will work with you to identify areas of training that you would require. These are potentially
  • immediate life support
  • recognising a deteriorating patient
  • pain control
  • principles of enhanced recovery
  • band five development
  • clinical supervisor
  • venepuncture and cannula insertion
  • catheter training
  • orthopaedic modules
  • orthopaedic Masters
  • preceptorship if appropriate

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for the delivery of a consistently high standard of care to meet patient needs and Unit objectives.

The post holder must demonstrate clinical expertise in the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of care using an holistic approach.

The post holder must possess fundamental management and facilitation skills in order to co-ordinate and supervise the activity of Unit staff, promote multi-disciplinary working and foster a supportive, learning environment.

In the absence of the Nurse the post holder will assume responsibility for the effective operation of the Unit.

As a Registered Nurse the post holder is expected to consistently act in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct.

Person Specification



  • Potential/ability to co-ordinate/manage shifts
  • Basic management ability
  • experience of customer service
  • active and current UK NMC nursing pin or have studied adult nursing and awaiting pin within the UK


  • One years experience of working with orthopaedic or surgical patients. daycare
  • knowledge of enhance recovery experience of nursing in area with transferable skills such as CCU surgical wards medical wards.



  • Delegation skills, resource management
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • IT skills
  • Clinical expertise, able to work on own initiative and sound decision making
  • Safe practitioner in the administration of medicines
  • Willing to/evidence of expanded clinical skills - IV drug administration, cannulation, phlebotomy etc.
  • Effective communication skills and courteous attitude with patients, relatives and MDT, promoting team building and good working relations
  • Neat and coherent written skills, attention to detail



  • Aware of cultural and social influences on health and importance of respecting diversity and differences
