The post holder will lead, facilitate and champion the provision of all clinical and non- clinical education and training for nursing and admin colleagues working in the outpatient directorate supporting department managers to ensure that staff achieve 100% compliance with any Trust mandatory training.

The post holder will support the directorate department managers to review and manage workforce skills gaps and support staff to achieve their full potential.

The post holder will support the directorate to achieve agreed education and training objectives for the OPD directorate. This will include ensuring that all new staff have an appropriate induction and probationary programme that is tailored to meet the skills requirements to carry out job roles.

Working together with the department managers, matron and general manager the post holder will plan and implement the annual directorate training and education to ensure that outpatients is staffed by the right person, in the right place at the right time, with the right skills, competence and knowledge.

The post holder will have clinical experience working and managing teams in outpatient settings

Main duties of the job

  • To support Department Managers, Matron & General Manager in leading and developing the education and training strategy of outpatient staff across clinical and non-clinical roles
  • Demonstrate inclusive, compassionate leadership and work alongside staff to promote and coaching/enable them to achieve the right skills and knowledge to be able to carry out their job role and any tasks competently.
  • To facilitate and teach any training and education relevant for outpatient services
  • To deliver training/ evidence-based teaching as required/ requested by department managers
  • To support a clinical supervision framework
  • Maintenance of general training records (in ESR and on Outpatient Education Shared Drive).
  • Ability to self-manage time with the ability to work independently or as part of a diverse team.
  • Encourage and foster one culture of care that supports learning from adverse events, near misses or incidents and provides relevant training and support when required.
  • Demonstrate ability to work across the Outpatient Directorate Departments.
  • Support the departmental managers with the appraisal season (as required).
  • To work alongside pre and post registered learners in the clinical environment to enable learning and assessments in practice whilst maintaining own skills and clinical credibility.

Job responsibilities

  • Professional knowledge has been acquired through degree and supplemented by specialised training (for example educational qualification)
  • The post holder will understand the differing education needs for clinical and admin roles
  • Support and mentor students whilst on placement.
  • Take responsibility for own continuing professional development and performance, including identifying own development needs and maintaining a personal portfolio in accordance with re-registration requirements.
  • Is proactive in the supervision and teaching of colleagues in the multi-professional team
  • Is an effective role model/educator to nursing/admin colleagues and medical staff.
  • Support training or enable access to mandatory training updates.
  • Support the training needs of the departments, acting as a resource for educational enquires.
  • Act as the OPD Directorate education resource for staff in relating to any mandatory training requirements as well as any directorate educational needs.
  • Be responsible for appropriate pre-registration student placements, ensuring good communication pathways are maintained between department leads/mentors and the university.
  • Link in with the university to support with creating positive learning environments for pre-registration students and provide updates to directorate colleagues.
  • Provide appropriate information for patients and colleagues.
  • Maintain up to date educational resources and ensure the Education drive is maintained for directorate use.

Person Specification



  • First Level Registration with current NMC revalidation status
  • Degree or equivalent experience in health care
  • Mentorship /Preceptorship qualification or equivalent
  • Recognised teaching & assessing qualification
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Ability to use electronic devices for teaching aids (Microsoft teams, powerpoint)


  • Post Graduate Certificate of education or equivalent or willingness to undertake
  • Management qualification or equivalent
  • Master's or Equivalent
  • ILS Provider Certificate or willingness to undertake
  • Leadership training ( e.g. CHFT Compassionate Leadership Programme)
  • Experience and knowledge of Apprenticeship and Nursing Associate Programmes



  • Experience working in the outpatient setting in a health care setting
  • Experience in developing ,delivering competency based training and skills-based packages
  • Experience at presenting using electronic devises to an audience
  • Experience at teaching using informal and formal teaching methods in outpatients
  • Experience in supporting learners and colleagues with education & training whilst assessing competency in the workplace
  • Understands Outpatients, Appointments and Records directorate services
  • Up to date professional knowledge


  • Experience and knowledge of Apprenticeship and Nursing Associate Programmes
  • Commitment to clinical audit, research and evidence-based practice
