We are looking for an experienced midwife to join us as a diabetic midwife based at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich (QEW). This is a new role at QEW so you will be able to make it your own along with the support of the Band 7 Senior diabetic midwife. You will work alongside the diabetic team at our sister site, University Hospital Lewisham, and may be required to go there on occasions
As a member of the maternal medicine team, you will be responsible for helping provide midwifery care to pregnant women/birthing people with diabetes and with other existing co-morbidities.
Working within a case loading model and supported by the lead Diabetic midwife, you will provide direct maternity care for these women/birthing people in conjunction with the maternal medicine consultants and the multidisciplinary teams (MDT). Working collaboratively with the individual woman/birthing person and you will be responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and coordinating their maternity care pathway on the Queen Elizabeth site.
Main duties of the job
As the midwife in this role you will work collaboratively with the other team members, assist the ongoing development of maternal medicine care pathways and frameworks in line with national policies as a key member of the maternal medicine team.
You will act as a professional role model, leading and coordinating the team whilst behaving in an exemplary manner at all times.
You will be accountable for the overall provision of excellent care, providing evidenced based, woman / birthing person centered midwifery to your women / birthing people in the outpatient, inpatient and community settings.
You will be responsible for the Midwifery care of the Diabetic women / birthing people on the Queen Elizabeth Site, whilst also liaising with the Diabetic Specialist Midwife on the Lewisham site to ensure the care that is offered reflects best practice across both sites.

Experience, Knowledge & Skills
Essential
- Ability to assess and plan care for women in all aspects of midwifery care.
- Understands the needs of postnatal women/birthing people
- Knowledge of how to access emergency services in both hospital and community setting
- Can interpret CTGs and identify features which deviate from accepted parameters of normality
- Experienced in resuscitation of the newborn
- Experience in caring of women/birthing people in low risk setting including home births and waterbirths.
- Computer literacy
- Able to deliver a high standard of evidence based individual client care
- Effective communicator with good leadership and interpersonal skills
- Evidence of ability to take charge in the absence of their direct line manager
- Demonstrate midwifery skills underpinned by current evidence oTo include suturing, venepuncture and cannulation or operineal repair/ commitment to achieve competence within 12 months of appointment
- Demonstrate an awareness of the importance of audit and policy
- Demonstrate competence in the promotion of infant feeding using experience based practice
