We are seeking a highly motivated, passionate, client centred and experienced Senior Midwife to join the Birth Centre at Queen Elizabeth Hospital

This is a great opportunity for a current band 6 midwife with extensive experience or band 7 to join the leadership team at the birth centre at QEW working in a job share with the existing Lead Midwife.

The Birth Centre has a total of 4 luxury well equipped birthing rooms, with pools and home from home facilities and a supportive team placing client experiences at the heart of what we do.

You will demonstrate excellent decision making and communication skills with the ability to liaise and negotiate with other leaders throughout the maternity unit to facilitate patient flow thereby enhancing the patient experience.

You will have the ability to manage conflict and diffuse difficult situations, enabling a positive outcome for all involved. With excellent leadership skills you will lead and support your team of staff motivating them to provide high quality care and service delivery, whilst ensuring they are given the opportunities to develop themselves.

Main duties of the job

As the Birth Centre Manager, you will focus on the delivery of high quality, safe and effective care focused on improving outcomes and experiences for women/ birthing people and their families. Midwives in this role will:
  • Have continuous responsibility for their clinical area
  • Be the key contact member for the multidisciplinary team
  • Provide professional leadership and line management for yourteam of midwifery and support staff
  • Delegate work and supervise colleagues accordingly
  • Assess clients, plan, implement and evaluate evidence-basedcare
  • Provide expert clinical advice to clients and staff
  • Ensure patient pathways are optimally managed
  • Manage budgets and resources efficiently and effectively
  • Be responsible for the safety of the clinical environment
  • Champion a culture of learning and quality improvement in the clinical area.
  • Ensure his/her group of clients have a managed pathway

    Job Summary

    The Ward Manager focuses on the delivery of high quality, safe and effective care focused on improving outcomes and experiences for patients, families and carers. Midwives in this role will:

    • Delegate work and supervise colleagues accordingly
    • Assess patients, plan, implement and evaluate evidence basedcare
    • Provide expert clinical advice
    • Ensure patient pathways are optimally managed
    • Manage budgets and resources efficiently and effectively
    • Be responsible for the safety of the clinical environment
    • Champion a culture of learning and quality improvement in the clinical area.
    • Ensure his/her group of patients have a managed pathway and beds in the ward are optimally utilised, seeking expert support if required.


    Person Specification

    Qualifications and Training

    Essential

    • 1st level Registered Midwife with current NMC Registration
    • Degree level qualification or equivalent demonstrable experience.
    • Evidence of on-going professional development in a midwifery field of practice
    • Practice Assessor /Practice Supervisor


    Desirable

    • Recognised leadership development training
    • Educated to Masters level or equivalent
    • Examination of the newborn course or working towards


    Experience

    Essential

    • Relevant post qualification experience
    • Significant post registration experience with experience at Band 6, to include: oSupervisory experience and management of a midwifery team oTeaching, mentoring and leadership experience within a clinical environment oExperience of working within a multidisciplinary team oEvidence of acting as a change agent and role model
    • To have a broad experience of working at a senior clinical level and be able to demonstrate proven managerial and leadership skills.
    • Evidence of involvement in the development of protocols and/or undertaking of clinical audit
    • Significant specialist expertise underpinned by theory


    Desirable

    • Experience of effectively managing rosters
    • People management skills including appointing and managing staff
    • Experience of managing timescales for a delegated piece of work/project
