The Autonomic nursing Team is a small, well-established team and we are looking for an enthusiastic and enquiring nurse to join us.We are part of the multidisciplinary autonomic service who assess, diagnose and treat people with a range of autonomic disorders.
No prior autonomic knowledge or experience is expected as comprehensive autonomic training will be provided.
You will be expected, with the support of the autonomic team, to provide high quality patient care. This will include support and education to newly diagnosed patients/families, management of acute patient treatments and providing support and surveillance of long-term complex patients. Liaison with health professionals within UCLH and outside the Trust in both primary and secondary care is an important part of the role.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a nurse with excellent communication skills. You must enjoy working as part of a team but be able to undertake elements of the role independently (once trained). Knowledge of autonomic disorders is not essential as you will undertake a training program however experience working with patients and families with complex care needs either in neurology, palliative care or other chronic disease would be an advantage as would experience of teaching or training patients and families.

To assess the health and wellbeing of people with autonomic disorders who attend the hospital as inpatients, outpatients and day care users.

To provide an individualised approach to patient care in collaboration with the wider autonomic team

To work collaboratively with the autonomic nursing team to:

plan and deliver programs to address the diagnostic needs of people with autonomic disorders

plan and deliver programs to address the complex and changing health and well-being needs of people with autonomic disorders

To provide expert advice to patients and health professionals through the autonomic telephone and email service

To contribute to the development of services for people with autonomic disorders

You should be motivated to learning about autonomic conditions. Experience in managing your own workload and problem solving are essential.

Person Specification

Knowledge and Qualifications


  • Registered Nurse - Part 1,2 or relevant section of the register
  • Teaching / assessment programme
  • Committed to providing safe, effective and timely-patient-centred care in accordance with NMC code of Conduct and Trust core standards


  • Relevant specialist post graduate programme
  • Working toward or having completed the 148 neuro course or equivalent
  • Demonstrates an understanding of and commitment to the needs of the autonomic service



  • Previous experience at Band 5
  • Previous experience in neurology, medical or chronic disease management and palliative care

Skills and Abilities


  • Demonstrates evidence of ability to teach others
  • Able to prioritise own workload
  • Acts on own initiative and can problem-solve using available resources
  • Able to work across organisational and professional boundaries
  • Ability to help initiate, sustain and evaluate change
