NHS England commissions a tertiary interstitial lung disease (ILD) service at UHB. UHB provides multi-disciplinary care for patients with inflammatory and fibrotic ILDs. As a result of a major research grant for UHB, the DETER-ILD project will look at diagnostic and prognostic indicators and a variety of health outcomes for over 5,000 patients with ILD. Project management will involve establishment of a study database, liaison with informatics services within the Trust, data capture and data analysis in collaboration with University of Birmingham biostatisticians. It is envisaged that a number of work packages will be undertaken within the time frame of this study, which is anticipated to be 3 years.

Another part of the role is to develop a research repository for the Birmingham Regional Severe Asthma Service (BRSAS). BRSAS is one of the largest severe asthma services in the UK serving a population of 7.5 million across the West Midlands and beyond. BRSAS is one of the leading centres for adults providing advice, assessment and biologic treatment to patients suffering from difficult to control asthma and is formed of multidisciplinary clinical and research team.

BRSAS has an active multi-focus research program that includes severe asthma genetics, biomarkers development, clinical trials, and research into co-morbidities such as obesity, obstructive sleep apnoea, inducible laryngeal obstruction, and breathing pattern disorders.

Main duties of the job

The Respiratory Research Project Manager is a key member of the research team, taking a lead role in supporting and driving the research projects and ensuring that key milestones are met. The post holder will provide professional and high-quality project management. The post holder will organise, accurately record, monitor, and schedule all project work activities relating to the projects.

The post holder is required to work on their own initiative on a regular basis and manage their own workload this will require excellent planning and organisational skills. The post holder must be able to communicate information to a wide range of staff groups, i.e. Respiratory Medicine Consultants, Clinical Scientists, Researchers, public and patient groups and external stakeholders. Using their own judgment, the post holder will be able to prioritise their workload effectively.

Person Specification



  • * Degree or equivalent professional qualification, management qualification (e.g. DMS, DipHSM, etc.) plus acquired training to masters level or equivalent experience
  • * Knowledge of own area of expertise acquired through degree or equivalent experience and training plus further management knowledge to post-graduate diploma level
  • * Experience of further academic/personal development
  • * Understanding of range of work practices, majority nonroutine with intermediate level of theoretical knowledge i.e. good understanding of the R& D processes.
  • * In-depth understanding of clinical research and trial management methodology, including applicable regulatory requirements
  • * Sound understanding of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and the EU clinical trials directive
