There is an exciting opportunity for a Senior Nurse Practitioner in Louise Ryan Unit to join our experienced and dynamic team. The ideal pot holder would be a qualified accredited Independent Healthcare Practitioner in GI physiology, experience of working in endoscopy environment is desirable but not necessary. You will use highly technical, mechanical and electronic instruments to measure various parameters within the digestive tract. Main duties of the job

  • To be responsible for running an efficient, safe and caring service as a senior member of the Louise Ryan Unit, providing a diagnostic service to patients with gastrointestinal motility disorders.
  • To carry out and report independently on a variety of GI physiology investigations, providing support and advice for patients coming through the Unit.
  • To develop therapeutic interventions related to GI motility disorders.
  • Take responsibility for own evidence based practice
  • Keep abreast of emerging practices within gastrointestinal physiology and develop practice protocols accordingly.
  • Contribute to the development of polices and evidence-based practice as appropriate
  • Contribute to the development of staff within the multidisciplinary team, providing support, advice, and formal / informal education

Job description

Job responsibilities

To provide an autonomous gastrointestinal physiology diagnostic nursing service carrying out a range of investigations, including high resolution oesophageal manometry and 24 hr pH studies, high resolution anorectal manometry, endoanal ultrasound, electrogastrograms, and a range of breath tests in accordance with agreed protocols

To use advanced nursing skills, including history taking, physical examination and interpretation of physiological investigations, and to write comprehensive reports on studies being carried out in the Unit.

To raise awareness of issues in GI motility regarding investigations, support, advice and treatment for patients.

To provide advice on indications for gastrointestinal investigations and explanation of findings to members of the multidisciplinary team.

To provide advice on bowel continence issues to clinical areas.

To lead and manage the Louise Ryan Unit, with appropriate support from the Lead Nurse in gastrophysiology

Education & Professional Qualifications


  • First level registration
  • Evidence of relevant post-registration education in gastrointestinal nursing and gastrophysiology
  • Unrestrcited NMC Registration to practice


  • ENB 998 or equivalent
  • Honours Degree in Nursing or related discipline or willing to work towards



  • Substantial post registration experience
  • Evidence of experience in conducting quality audits
  • Experience within gastrophysiology
  • Clinical management experience
  • Teaching/Supervision of other healthcare professionals

Skills and Attitudes


  • Ability to perform a range of physiological investigations
  • Ability to interpret and report independently on a range of physiological investigations
  • Ability to take patient history and informed consent
  • Evidence of organisational skills
  • Ability to problem-solve, prioritise, and work to deadlines
  • Understand the implications of working autonomously and carrying own case load
  • Knowledge of clinical governance, clinical risk and national benchmarks
  • Experience of participating in clinical audit
  • Experience of developing and using advanced practice protocols
  • Demonstrate skilled written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to think laterally and show flexibility in dealing with patients/situations
  • Proven IT skills


  • Knowledge of current treatments for bowel function disorders
