An exciting opportunity has arisen for a experienced nurse to become ward manager of Birch Ward at The redwoods Centre in Shrewsbury. Birch Ward is a 16 bedded mixed sex Acute Mental Health Inpatient ward.
The post holder will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and provide Leadership and be a role model to the team. They will provide quality evidence based nursing advice, support and care for patients with mental health needs and their carers within a multidisciplinary setting.
They will carry overall continuing responsibility for the management and leadership of the ward including administration and the overall co-ordination, assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care and the setting and auditing of standards of care.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will undertake assessments of individuals with complex mental health presentations, including those patients presenting with higher levels of risk. Develop in collaboration with the patient their care plan and their recovery plan. Offer specialist nursing assessment and advice where required. Take the lead in delivering therapeutic group work programmes as required.
Administer medication, complying with relevant Trust procedures and NMC Guidance. Ensure the safe custody of all patients as determined by the clinical team. This includes the supervision of patients within the hospital, grounds and the community, as required.
Provide clinical and managerial leadership on the ward. Assess and manage ongoing risks as identified during assessment, ensuring that this is done in collaboration with patients and carers. Regularly review risk factors and make changes to the management of them as necessary.
Continuing responsibility for the effective functioning of the clinical environment including resource management and ensuring safe staffing levels on a shift by shift basis. Overall responsibility for setting clinical and educational standards and monitoring and maintaining these standards.

Job responsibilities
Overall responsibility for setting clinical and educational standards and monitoring and maintaining these standards. Regularly undertake audits of clinical activity and standards and develop plans of action to address any improvements required. Participate in the on-site site Manager rota providing out of hours senior managerial / clinical advice, guidance and support on site. To be the first point of contact for fire, medical and psychiatric emergencies and coordinate Section 136 assessments as required.
The post holder will be required to work within the NMC Code of Practice and professional guidelines. Maintain an up-to-date level of professional competence within the specific environment. Attend meetings, multi-disciplinary ward rounds and case conferences as necessary and present information relating to patients or the service as necessary.
Line management responsibility for the ward on a 24 hour basis ensuring appropriate levels of staffing, allocating duties to the ward team and effective rota management. Responsible for the recruitment, performance management and development of staff within the ward team and for implementing staff management policies as necessary, e.g. sickness absence, grievance, harassment and bullying, disciplinary.
Provide clinical and managerial supervision to staff nurses and trainees and maintain accurate and up to date records in line with Trust policy. Carry out appraisals for staff on an annual basis and develop an annual training and development plan for the ward team. Responsible for effective budgetary management in line with Standing Financial Instructions.
