We are looking for someone who wants to use their finance skill to make a difference to the healthcare services we provide.

An opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and hardworking individual to join us. As part of the Management Accounts Team, you will provide a high quality accounting service to a range of Service Lines in the Care Groups. This is a rewarding and challenging role requiring financial and analytical expertise, underpinned by excellent communication and organisational skills.

The successful candidate should be training towards a CCAB Qualification or seeking to do so, with experience of working in a management accounting environment and a good working knowledge of the NHS would also be an advantage.

Main duties of the job

To provide an outward facing, high quality and customer focused complete management accounting service to a significant number of service lines and to support the work of the Senior Management Accountant.

Some of the key responsibilities of the role will include assisting in the production of management accounting information and high quality financial reports in line with required timescales, ensuring information is accurate, timely and robust, regularly liaising with Budget Holders and Operational Managers to ensure that the most effective financial decisions are made.

Job responsibilities

  • To provide advanced financial support and guidance to designated Service Line Managers and budget holders on all aspects of management accounting, utilising specialist knowledge of complex NHS accounting regulations and relevant legislation.
  • To produce month end and year-end financial reports for Service Lines using specialist knowledge of financial systems and other software packages including a narrative where required explaining key issues and reasons for budgetary variances, forecast outturn, discretionary staffing analysis and FIP progress.
  • To work with Service Line Managers and Budget Holders with complex funding, expenditure and manpower queries, with ability to impart often complex financial information to non-finance staff and to train budget managers in various aspects of budget management in a clear and user-friendly fashion.
  • Apply best accounting practices to ensure an accurate representation of the Service Lines financial performance.
  • To support, develop and influence the development of action plans to improve financial performance. Use developed persuasion, motivation and negotiation skills to encourage and influence Service Line Management Teams within the Service Lines to ensure they make cost-effective decision.
  • Work with Service Line Managers to understand their needs for financial information and to promptly provide it, allowing and ensuring Managers and budget holders understand and achieve budgetary control.
  • Work alongside Service Line Managers in the budget setting process ensuring that budgets are reflective of the resources required to deliver services.
  • Be able to use the Trust accounting packages to a high standard, thereby ensuring maximum information is available to the Service Lines and Trust.
  • To analyse complex variances by comparing actual income and expenditure versus budget, to take account of the complex interaction between activity and income and expenditure, or complex corporate service contracts and highlight areas of concern to the Senior Finance Staff, Service line Managers and Budget Holders to identify any financial and activity problem areas to persuade Managers to implement appropriate action.
  • To support Service Lines with the identification, development and monitoring of Financial Improvement Plans (FIPs) schemes.
  • To support the Care Group Management Accountant the production of Care Group reports and Care Group and Trustwide financial analysis and project work.
  • The role will include the line management of the Assistant Management Accountant(s).
  • Work with the relevant Managers to generate accurate financial forecasts for Service Lines, forecasting expenditure and non-contract income.
  • To input and manipulate complex financial data in detailed computer spreadsheets and reports, where speed and accuracy are essential.
  • To undertake light physical effort and extended periods of computer use in an office environment.
  • To maintain, monitor and input information into a variety of databases, ensuring accuracy and integrity of source data.
  • To initiate, maintain and develop appropriate procedure records and audit records, including the creation and upkeep of robust filing systems and to supply internal and external auditors with any information and explanations they require with regard to any aspects of the above.
  • To write and maintain desk procedure notes for own area of responsibility, and to support section as appropriate.
  • To establish an excellent working relationship with colleagues, holding monthly or periodic meetings as required to ensure effective feedback and service, providing advice in line with Standing Financial Instructions and financial policies and procedures.
  • Liaise with the Assistant Director of Finance Financial Performance and Care Group Management Accountant to agree the level of service and nature of information provided by the Financial Support team.

    Knowledge & Experience

    Essential

    • oExtensive demonstrable Management Accounting experience to include all aspects of monthly accounts production.
    • oDemonstrable experience of working in finance in a large organisation.


    Desirable

    • oDemonstrable large clinical setting Management Accounting experience


    Qualifications

    Essential

    • oProven A levels and 5 x GCSE Grade C or above or equivalent, including Mathematics and English Language at GCSE level.
    • oProven professional Accountancy qualification at NVQ level 5-6 OR Accountancy Degree OR CIMA (or equivalent) part qualified OR equivalent management accounts experience.
    • oProven evidence of continuing professional development


    Desirable

    • oProven Degree and CIMA (or equivalent) actively studying


    Aptitude & Abilities

    Essential

    • oHigh level of numeracy.
    • oStrong analytical skills with the ability to handle complex multi-faceted data and to make judgements and decisions based on the analysis.
    • oExcellent communication skills, written and verbal, with ability to demonstrate fluency, clarity and effectiveness at all levels.
