You have the opportunity as a band 5 theatre practitioner to make a difference and impact on our service users experience. We are looking for highly motivated individuals to be part of the team in theatres at the James Paget University Hospital. This exciting opportunity will mean you are part of a theatre team that is currently in transformation with the addition of two new orthopaedic elective hub theatres in mid 2024 and the addition of robotic surgery within the same time frame. This role requires you to have adaptability and expert knowledge in one speciality but also proficient in another and the willingness to learn multiple.

The Department has 13 Theatres which provide services for General Surgery, Colorectal, Breast, Gynaecological, Urology, ENT, Ophthalmology, Obstetrics, Trauma, Orthopaedics and Maternity alongside satelite anaesthesia opportunities.

You must be a Registered Nurse (NMC) or Registered Operating Department Practitioner (HCPC).

You will be given the opportunity to progress your professional development skills-based and educationally through our embedded band 5 development pathway, with the additional opportunity to develop skills in Surgical First Assist extended role.

Main duties of the job

You will work as part of the multi-disciplinary theatre team to provide care during the delivery of clinical services throughout the patients perioperative journey. The role requires an ability to work on your own initiative and as part of a team, within the appropriate legal requirements, acts, policies, procedures and guidelines. The successful applicants must be able to communicate effectively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team and be versatile to the department requirements. Acting as a role model and mentor for the students and visitors that access the department upholding the trusts values and behaviours.

Job responsibilities

The post holder is responsible for the assessment of care needs and the development implementation and evaluation of programmes of care.

- Ensure that agreed standards of practice within the area are maintained.

- Maintain personal contact with patients, other health care disciplines, relatives and visitors.

- Commitment to provide training and share knowledge to those around in the team and Mentorship support of new staff and student nurses.

-To undertake appropriate enhanced roles, following the necessary training e.g. IV drug administration, ECG recording, Advanced Scrub Practitioner (ASP) Role

-Ensure safe custody and administration of drugs, in accordance with Trust Policy.

-Ensure that they can safely admit/discharge or transfer patients from theatre and or recovery.

-Responsible for the management and co-ordination of theatre activities in the absence of more senior staff.

Person Specification

Education and qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Nurse or ODP NMC/HCPC


Desirable

  • Preparation for mentorship course or equivalent
  • Evidence of Continuous Professional Development


Experience and knowledge

  • Previous NHS experience within last 12 months
  • Broad clinical knowledge base

  • Recent and/or current post registration experience in an acute Trust
