The role of the deputy ward manager will be to support the Senior ward sister in all aspects of staff management.

This is an exciting opportunity to make a positive impact in a busy gastro ward. This requires someone who is enthusiastic, positive and is willing to make a difference .

Main duties of the job

The main responsibilities In the absence of the senior sister to take responsibility for all the aspects of staff management, including recruitment process of staff, sickness performance and monitoring

Adhering to the Trust Human Resource policies to ensure a fair and consistent approach when dealing with staff issues under the guidance of the Matron or Associate Director of Patient care .

Person Specification



  • Registered Nurse
  • Mentorship Qualification


  • Speciality course or competencies in clinical skills relevant to the speciality of the ward
  • FirstLevel/Supervisory Management Qualification or Course



  • Basic computer literacy in I.H.S system in the organisation and basic word processing, e mail
  • Knowledge of relevant NHS legislation to include clinical governance/COSHH/Health and Safety/Infection Control/Clinical Waste/Manual Handling / PEAT / Confidentiality and the Data Protection Act
  • Basic knowledge of the Patient and Public Involvement agenda


  • Experience or evidence of knowledge of clinical audit
  • Evidence of or knowledge of how to manage conflict



  • Proven experience of clinical leadership of a team and leading team through change
  • Experience of mentoring
