An exciting opportunity has arisen for a permanent full time Principal Clinical Psychologist (band 8b) to play a key leadership role in our Acute Inpatient Services in South Staffordshire. The post will be based at St George’s Hospital in Stafford across a mixed-sex adult acute inpatient unit and our Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit. Units- both of which are accredited by AIMS-WA (Accreditation for Inpatient Mental Health Services-Working-Age Adult Acute Wards).

Adult Acute Inpatient Services provide multi-disciplinary care to adults presenting with psychological distress, which requires assessment and treatment in hospital. The successful applicant will be the lead psychologist across the four adult acute mental health wards and work alongside a Highly Specialist Clinical Psychologist and three Assistant Psychologists based at same location.

The role will involve active service development to support the provision of high quality interventions, which will include psychological assessments, formulations, group work and brief therapeutic work. The role will further involve indirect working to improve psychological sense making of patient presentations by the team and to inform psychological intervention plans by taking an active role in supervision, post incident support sessions, service development as well as facilitating reflective practice sessions, teaching and training.

We are seeking a person with an enthusiasm to play a lead role in a continually developing service in a creative and innovative way. Experience of delivering brief focused psychological interventions to assist people at a time of particular distress would be advantageous. Previous experience of leadership in an acute setting is highly desirable.

The successful candidate can be expected to be well supported though regular clinical and managerial supervision as well as training to develop both professionally and personally within the role. They will be further supported by the Inpatient Services Collective Leads Group and play a key role in this group. The successful candidate will join a friendly and engaged inpatient psychology team who have all strived to maintain and deliver good quality psychological support to patients and staff alike during the pandemic.
