The Workforce Development and Student Support Team are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic Midwife with a keen interest in education and development with experience of supporting learners embarking on Midwifery training.

We seek a new member of the team who is ready to shape and influence the clinical learning environment through the delivery of pastoral support to student midwives and newly qualified midwives in preceptorship .In addition they will provide experience, knowledge and guidance to staff supporting student learners in clinical placement areas.

The role aims to enhance the quality of practice and the practice placement experience and positively contribute to the future healthcare professional workforce.

The interview date for this role will be 20th March 2024.

Main duties of the job

The Practice Educator will:

Maximise the number of students who can be supported within clinical practice areas.

Ensure that the student experience is of the highest quality and enables the greatest benefit from the individual clinical learning experience.

Enhance and support the role of the Practice Assessor, Practice Supervisor and Preceptor.

Ensure that high priority issues for the Trust, such as dignity and respect, patient safety, patients first, and dementia care are included in student supervision and preceptorship activity.

Assist with students experiencing difficulty and liaise with the universities to develop remedial action plans.

Support for newly qualified professionals will be provided during their preceptorship and induction period.

  • Recognised qualification as a Midwife and current registration as a Midwife with the NMC
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development
  • Recognised qualification relating to teaching or supporting learners in practice


  • Evidence of Degree in Health-related subject or working toward



  • Substantial and relevant post-registration experience
  • Experience of providing mentorship / practice supervision / assessment to students in practice
  • Demonstrates understanding and experience of mentor/student assessment processes.
  • Experience of working within teams


  • Experience of inter-professional working

Knowledge and Awareness


  • Knowledge of current issues affecting education in healthcare, including quality monitoring issues and the modernisation of the NHS


  • Knowledge and understanding of curriculum content of pre-registration nursing and midwifery courses and post-registration mentorship courses and requirements.
  • Awareness of the NMC Standards for Education
