LOCUM CONSULTANT CLINICAL NEUROPHYSIOLOGIST

We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic, innovative, and forward-thinking locum Consultant for 8PAs to join our busy Clinical Neurophysiology Service. This is an exciting opportunity to join the team ahead of the move into the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital later this year and develop new ways of working for the benefit of the patients we serve. Sandwell and West Birmingham provides a range of Neurophysiological investigations across the West Midlands region. The team is proactive in training and developing staff at all grades.

Applications are welcomed from candidates with MRCP (or equivalent) who are on the General Medical Council's Specialist Register in Clinical Neurophysiology or general register or who will be within six months of obtaining their CCT at the time of interview. In addition, applicants should demonstrate within their application that they are fully trained in the generality of Clinical Neurophysiology.

Main duties of the job

The post will enable the successful applicant to work alongside another two existing consultants and very experienced team of clinical physiologists and scientists. Sub-specialty interest will be encouraged and supported to develop the expanding service. Clinical duties will mainly comprise of EMG clinics to meet the increasing demand for these services, with secured admin and personal professional development time.

The appointee will take proprortionate responsibility with existing Consultants for the efficient running of the clinical service, working with clinical, scientific, and managerial colleagues towards achieving and maintaining national maximum waiting times.

As a result, the base of this role may change to MMUH from 2024 (or beyond).     Job responsibilities

    Information about the Specialty

    Clinical Neurophysiology at SWB currently operates from City Hospital but later in 2024 will provide inpatient investigations solely from MMUH. The majority of outpatients will be scheduled in the main department which will move to Sandwell General Hospital site in due course. This will enable patients to be seen closer to home in a treatment Centre rather than an acute hospital. A range of services are provided to a large geographic area of the West Midlands, as well as a highly regarded on call service for critically unwell patients with neurological deficit.

    The successful candidate will support and develop quality Neurophysiology services and work alongside Consultant Neurophysiologists, Dr Suliman Ahmed and Dr Sudha Subbiah. In addition, the team consists of a Service Manager, Deputy Manager, a compliment of Clinical Physiologists and Scientists as well as an efficient administration team including two medical secretaries. The team has strong support from group management. The successful candidate will be initially based at City Hospital however a new satalite department will open in the Midland Metropolitan Hospital later in 2024. Here all in patients services will take place and some out patients.

    Qualifications:

    Essential

    • oEntry on the Specialist Register in Clinical Neurophysiology (or entry expected within 6 months from the date of interview)
    • oMRCP or equivalent


    Desirable

    • oHigher Degree


    Clinical Experience:

    Essential

    • oClinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining CCT in Clinical Neurophysiology


    Desirable

    • oSpecial interest in any area of Neurophysiology


    Clinical Effectiveness

    Essential

    • oExperience of conducting clinical audit


    Teaching and Training experience:

    Essential

    • oAbility to teach clinical skills to medical and nursing staff and other disciplines


    Desirable

    • oFormal training in teaching


    Research, Innovation and Service Improvement Experience:

    Essential

    • oAbility to apply research outcomes to clinical problems


    Desirable

    • oPublications in relevant peer-reviewed journals in the last five years.


    Other Requirements:

    Essential

    • oFull GMC Registration
    • oAn understanding of the current NHS environment, particularly in relation to reforms, initiatives and issues.
