- The Cossham Dialysis Unit is located at the Cossham Hospital, Lodge Road BS 15 1LF. This unit is run by the part of the Richard Bright Renal Unit, a regional renal transplant centre with five Haemodialysis Satellite Units across the South West area. Cossham is the biggest dialysis unit with in NBT, having 24 slots in the morning and 24 slots in the afternoon. We work long days 11.5 hours shift.
- As a nurse working in our service, you will be supported to learn the skills required to manage patients requiring renal replacement, both haemodialysis/haemodiafiltration.
- Development opportunities- you will develop expert skills in Haemodialysis and renal specialist care and have access to educational opportunities to attend renal specialist courses.
- The Richard Bright renal unit also has an acute haemodialysis unit, an inpatient renal dialysis, Home dialysis Unit team and renal transplant ward based in the Brunel Building, Southmead Hospital, Bristol.

Main duties of the job
As a Staff Nurse within our department, key duties will include:
- Providing specialist nursing care for a group of patients with multiple complex needs with end-stage renal failure that requires haemodialysis, therefore requiring the use of haemodialysis technologyo Assessment and observation of patients and administering medicationo Opportunity to take charge of the ward with a Band 6 colleague to develop co-ordination and leadership skills.
- Patients attending haemodialysis undergo treatment to remove waste products from the blood stream using a dialysis machine. As kidney failure is a long term condition, patients and staff develop long term professional relationships. Patient treatment can take them through transfers to other treatment modes for example transplantation or peritoneal dialysis and supportive care for those patients nearing the end of their lives.
- We support our patients to work jointly with staff in decision making on their treatment and active involvement in the treatment procedure through shared and self-care programmes.

Knowledge, Training Experience and Skills Required
- Registered nurse with current NMC licence to practice.
- Evidence of continued professional development i.e. a professional portfolio and participation in appraisal and development review.
- To have achieved a recognised teaching & assessing qualification.
- Completion of training for additional clinical skills required in the ward/department i.e. IV drug administration/cannulation & venepuncture/male catheterisation/training to monitor and change syringes for epidural & PCA syringe drivers. ECG training.
- Green card training for the use of pumps or machinery relevant to the ward or department.
- Evidence of attendance at mandatory training appropriate to the role.
- Competence in the use of computers and electronic communication systems or expectation to develop existing skills further as the needs of the service dictate.
- Evidence of an ability to critically appraise and utilise research to maintain and improve patient care.
- Sound knowledge of health promotion issues to ensure junior staff, patients and carers are provided with education, support and advice as required.

- Organise and participate in the delivery of high standards of evidence-based nursing care.
- Take regular responsibility to carry out required planned, direct patient care to a high standard without direct supervision in accordance with established nursing procedures and policies.
- To report to the appropriate members of the multidisciplinary team any significant changes in a patients condition or situation.
- Responsible for taking charge of the ward/department on a regular basis in the absence of the person who has continuing responsibility.
- Take personal responsibility as a team leader for the delivery of care of patients in a defined area.
- To contribute towards health promotion for all patients by providing education, support and advice, as necessary Ensure referral to appropriate professionals or agencies as required.

Working Conditions/Effort
- Nursing staff may be required to work in any location owned, managed or attributed to the Trust sites depending on the demands of the service.
- Workloads may be unpredictable on a day to day basis and variations in activity should be expected
- Staff are required to walk or stand for the majority of the shift time.
- Weekend and night working may be expected as part of the role, unless otherwise agreed with relevant managers.
- Manual handling of loads and patients using the appropriate aids and assessments will be required on all shifts.
- Pushing commodes, trolleys, beds and other furniture according to manual handling policies may be required on all shifts.
- Contact with blood and bodily fluids on all shifts.
- The staff nurse may be expected to deal with distressed, violent or aggressive (verbally or physically) patients and relatives on occasion.
- The requirement to take responsibility for nursing acutely ill and vulnerable patients at times.
- Due to the nature of the workload staff will be required to concentrate at a high level often during the shift in relation to carrying out instructions/documentation/communication. This will involve the use of computer screens for short periods of time.
- The staff nurse will be required to be responsible for multiple tasks, delegation, other staff/carers and patients simultaneously frequently throughout a shift.
