The post holder will support the Ophthalmic Imaging team for the provision and overall smooth running of our clinical services including IT trouble shooting. They will have responsibility for performing and training staff in all imaging tests and procedures including Ophthalmic Ultrasound.

The post holder will be responsible for the effective and efficient maintenance of a comprehensive angiography, imaging and photography service to Bristol Eye Hospital. They should be able to prioritise and plan their own workload and have the ability to work independently as well as working closely and supervising other members of the team. The post holder will support the Heads of Department (HODs) with the management of the department.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Duties

You will be performing and training staff on the following clinical care duties (this list is not exhaustive and will change with the service in line with developing competency frameworks):


OCT, OCT-A and fundus photography including widefield

Anterior Segment Imaging (Topography, OCT, Slit lamp photography)

Confocal microscopy

Research Imaging including the Topcon TRC 50DX fundus camera

Ophthalmic Ultrasound including Ultrasound Bio-microscopy

Leadership and management

To support clinical research, audit and teaching activities as required.

Act as a deputy and support to the Head of Ophthalmic Imaging

Participate in department and subspecialty meetings as required and contribute to service innovation and development.

Assist with the departmental staff allocation, ensuring all clinics are covered as required.

Communicate with relevant departments to facilitate training in imaging techniques, coordinating this training and being involved with sign off as appropriate.

Have knowledge of department and Trust policies including annual leave, sickness, absence and recruitment

Assist heads of department with recruitment, absence reporting, appraisals, 1:1's

Be a point of contact to other members of staff as appropriate, both professionally and personally as required.

Person Specification

Knowledge and Experience


  • Extensive working knowledge of ophthalmic procedures and techniques
  • Experience of learning new systems
  • Current working knowledge of general medical/ ophthalmic conditions, equipment and techniques.
  • Experience of ophthalmic imaging research protocols


  • Experience and / or knowledge of ophthalmic ultrasound
  • Experience of management or providing management support
  • Experience of deputising to departmental manager

Qualifications and Training


  • Extensive experience of ophthalmic and vision science


  • Educated to degree level preferably in a bio-medical science
  • Masters degree or equivalent in a bio-medical science

Skills and Abilities


  • Competent in a wide range of ophthalmic imaging modalities with high level of accuracy and excellent hand-eye coordination
  • Good communication skills / managing relationships
  • Planning and organisation skills
  • Excellent computer skills and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to act within procedures or make judgments outside set procedures
  • Competent to make independent decisions
  • Understand the critical importance of confidentiality and data protection
  • Ability to travel between different working locations and weekend working if required
