A fantastic opportunity has arisen for an experienced Colposcopist to join our team here at Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust . We are looking to recruit a dynamic individual with a passion for cervical screening and the prevention of cervical cancer. Our colposcopy service strives to provide the very best care for women accessing our services and as a team we work collaboratively together to achieve this.

Based within The Women's Health Unit a number of outpatient clinics provide person centred care for women with a wide variety of gynaecological needs. These clinics include urogynaecology, colposcopy, hysteroscopy, and the termination of pregnancy service. The gynaecology outpatient department is also attached to the unit and nursing care rotates throughout the two departments.

Main duties of the job

Although usual hours of work for the Women's Health Unit are from Monday to Friday 08:00- 17:30 (times dependent on clinical sessions allocated) there may be occasional requirement for weekend and evening clinical sessions.

The post holder will be an accredited nurse colposcopist, and work in collaboration with other colposcopy health care professional professionals to give appropriate specialist advice including support and education in relation to all aspects of colposcopy treatment and related issues.

Job responsibilities

The Advanced Specialist Nurse will provide highly specialised care within Colposcopy as follows:
  • Provide expert advice and ensure the needs of the patient are met by leading, challenging and changing practice.
  • They will lead change as required.
  • To work with the lead colposcopist to ensure that the service collects accurate and valid data by which to measure its performance. This will ensure that the requisite information is available to enable the completion of all required and mandated returns and audits.
  • To undertake clinical audit and delivery of regular reports.
  • Liaise with departments to coordinate the quality and clinical information services.
  • Attend internal and external meetings, ensuring information is cascaded.
  • Deliver efficient data collection, effective communication with other agencies, and effective and timely failsafe activities.
  • Independently manage patients, providing specialist advice and treatment from point of referral to discharge including independent management of patient results.
  • They will recognise and act as an advocate for patients, carers, service and organisation.

Responsibility for Patient Care
  • Assessing the individuals care needs, developing, planning, implementing and evaluating programmes of care to meet the needs of patients and undertake all forms of care within the clinical environment.
  • Provide the patient with comprehensive information regarding clinical procedures ensuring informed consent.
  • To run nurse led clinics. Be proficient in undertaking enhanced clinical skills commensurate with the post.
  • Maintain and evaluate the use of documentation.
  • Contribute to the development of innovation, creativity and improvement.
  • Actively give and receive constructive criticism and feedback.
  • Utilise advanced knowledge and skills relating to the speciality to provide specialist advice to other members of the multidisciplinary team on the basis of patient assessment.
  • Liaising with staff from multi-disciplines in matters relating to patient care and equipment relevant to care.
  • Maintain accurate and timely patients records and documentation ensuring confidentiality.

  • Using professional judgements is able to analyse a range of patient conditions and act appropriately.

  • Liaising closely with other multi-disciplinary team members involved in care and support of the critically ill patient and their family, which may include being involved with a major trauma/ death.
  • Analyse various sources of information to assess risks and make judgements on the potential impact Planning and organising.
  • To assist in the quality and effectiveness of all aspects of the NHS cervical Screening Programme provided within the organisation.
  • Liaise with relevant departments and coordinate the quality and clinical information services for service users who are diagnosed/ treated within the Trust.
  • Practicing effectively and within National standards to ensure the delivery of agreed targets.
  • Monitor capacity to meet the demands of the services, pre-empting and raising any concerns identified.
  • Provide specialist advice concerning patients referred in to the service.
  • Coordinate and manage MDT.
  • Ensure that practices undertake a consistent approach in identifying patients suitable foran MDT approach to their care.
  • Attend regular multi-disciplinary meetings for care discussion and protocol review, including cytology, histology services.
  • Organise and plan own day to day workload or activities in order to meet the demands of the role.
  • Actively contribute and participate in the Trusts clinical governance agenda.
  • Ensure that Critical Incident reporting is prompt and effective.
  • Within your individual speciality be responsible for the safe use of expensive complex theatre equipment ensuring that it is maintained in working order and used in accordance with manufacturers instructions and equipment training guidelines.
  • Liaising closely with other multi-disciplinary team members involved in care and support of the critically ill patient and their family, which may include being involved with a major trauma/death Responsibilities for Physical and / or Financial Resources.
  • Ensure effective use of material resources/supplies within the unit in consultation with senior staff.
  • Monitor, control and store resources/supplies according to the requirements/specifications of the clinical environment.
  • Participate in ensuring appropriate usage and monitoring of departmental resources.
  • Develop a good understanding of the financial management of the department, cost implications of poor use of resources and poor staff rostering.
  • Responsibility for Policy and Service Development and Implementation.
  • To offer constructive views on how the existing service and teamwork can be evaluated and improved upon.
  • Provide support and training to other Practitioners.
  • Contribute to the review of Standard Operating Procedures for the service and clinical guidelines.
  • Support the Service Leads with service development as required Responsibilities for Human Resources and Leadership.
  • Provide highly visible and accessible professional leadership and demonstrate expert knowledge and standards of clinical practice.
  • To plan, organise and supervise staff according to competencies and workload alongside the Lead Nurse, Matron and ward manager.
  • Contribute to the strategic and operational development of specialist Services.
  • Participate in development reviews for self and staff.
  • Being responsible/ accountable for own clinical/ professional development including the review process.
  • Ensure the effective use of physical and financial resources.
  • Act as a resource, providing clinical leadership and facilitating professional development amongst the multidisciplinary team both within and outside the organisation.
  • Promote best practice, utilising local and regional benchmarking groups for the generation and promotion of standards, nursing and clinical guidelines.
  • Contribute to clinical governance arrangements by providing expert input and securing quality improvement, including influencing other disciplines, to help deliver quality.
  • Promote team working, build rapport and collaborative working practices with multidisciplinary team. Liaise with inter-hospital departments and personnel cross organisational and professional groups. Ensuring effective communication and interpersonal skills with other disciplines and organisations responsibilities for Teaching and Training.
  • To work with the Lead Nurse for gynaecology to assess clinical competencies for nursing within colposcopy and provide training/education and support as necessary to staff.
  • Participate in induction of new staff including bank and agency staff.
  • Act as mentor/preceptor to new staff.
  • Attend Mandatory training in line with training schedule.
  • Attend all necessary training and updates for use of equipment.
  • Maintain continued professional development.
  • To participate in the Information Management and Technology (IM& T) Strategy of the Trust and ensure electronic patient records are maintained for all aspects of patient care Research, Development and Audit.
  • To assist in research, development and audit.
  • Demonstrates ability to use current research finding to develop practice and is able to critically evaluate current practice a. Ionising radiation b. Static electricity explosion hazards, COSHH.

Physical Skills and Effort
  • Use of physical effort to carry out the demands of the job role (e.g. pushing and pulling trolleys / support to manoeuvre patients).
  • Post holder will be fit to undertake colposcopy and they will have the physical skill and stamina to undertake daily lists.
  • They will be skilled in the undertaking of clinics.
  • To undertake the necessary training to ensure safe use of medical devices and equipment.
  • Computer skills and typing skills are a requirement for the role and the post holder must be able to use all electronic forms of communication and electronic requesting systems.
  • Good communication skills are essential.
  • They will be able to formulate a management plan regarding further management

Special Working Conditions
  • The post holder will be able to concentrate for long periods of time undertaking colposcopy.
  • A flexible approach to work is required in order to meet the needs of the service. The job-holder may be required to work across Trust sites and attend external meetings.

Person Specification



  • Appropriate NMC Registration(RN/RM/)
  • Evidence of further study/knowledge at masters level or equivalent which could include post graduate diploma in area of Post registration qualification / training in area of clinical speciality which will can include the BSCCP Colposcopy Training Programme
  • BSCCP (British Society for colposcopy and cervical screening accreditation)


  • Supporting Learning in Practice (SLIP) or equivalent. Or an approved supervisor/assessor preparation accreditation
  • Post registration qualification in relevant specialty
  • Leadership or management development qualification
  • Advanced communication skills qualification



  • Significant post-registration experience working within women's health/ gynaecology.
  • Experience of assessment, development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care for patients/service-users/staff demonstrating knowledge of specific needs
  • Experience of supervising others
  • Experience of managing change
  • Have an understanding of team dynamics and an ability to influence the building of effective working relationship[s
  • Experience of working in an MDT and across organisational and professional boundaries applying sensitive communication skills
