This post is an exciting opportunity for the right person to join our dynamic team within the Maximising Independence service line. We are looking for a highly skilled Occupational Therapist to join us as a Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner (tACP), bringing their unique dual training to this post located within the established short term rehabilitation team alongside plans to develop a vocational rehabilitation pathway. The expectation is to ascertain the real narrative of the work performance and understanding of the environmental demands, ensuring that the correct intervention is implemented to keep the patient in work or to return to work.

The primary focus shall be development from novice to expert, aligned to knowledge and skills gained through completing a PGdip or MSc ACP programme. The tACP will work within their job plan and have protected time for development whilst receiving regular supervision and contributing to development of colleagues.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide highly skilled occupational therapy assessment, education, advice and treatment to adult patients in the community to standards set by BAOT and HCPC
  • Manage own workload and be a source of expertise providing an advisory service to colleagues
  • Actively support continuing professional development of staff, providing expert advice and teaching
  • Participate in seven-day working
  • Contribute to the development of the Vocational Rehabilitation pathway
  • Assess patients holistically within the context of the work/home environments, using appropriate assessments in accordance with patients' physical and psychological conditions to identify issues that affect occupational performance, ensuring appropriate interventions are recommended; Contribute to workplace assessment of patients including diverse or complex presentations of physical health, psychological health using advanced clinical reasoning skills and ergonomic/environmental and psychosocial assessment techniques to determine implications upon work performance and productivity
  • Contribute to the development, promotion, monitoring and review of policies and initiatives for the Vocational Rehabilitation pathway
  • Required to work in different locations, completing telephone assessments and face-to-face assessments, including input at the workplace location if required
  • Attend meetings relevant to the delivery of an effective Vocational Rehabilitation pathway

Job description Job responsibilities

As a member of the senior multi-disciplinary team, the tACP will play a pivotal role in the ongoing development of the service. They will initiate, manage and drive change, innovating changes in practice for the benefit of patient care in line with current Trust and local programmes. Approximately 20% of the post holders time will be used for these purposes.

The tACP will undertake the role in accordance with Trust and Divisional guidelines and in accordance with professional responsibilities and boundaries.

ACP trainees are part of the ACP programme and will attend University to successfully achieve a PGdip or MSc in ACP, this will be approximately 20% of the trainees time.

ACP trainees will develop advanced practice and provide assessment, advice and treatment for patients assessed needs.
  • The trainee ACP scope of practice is primarily defined by the National Framework for multi-professional Advanced Clinical Practice. The curriculum defines competences in clinical practice against which the tACP will be assessed over time leading to successful credentialing.
  • During training the tACP will develop their scope of competence; tACPs are primarily responsible to ensure they act within the limits of their competence at all times. This is supported by the appropriate curriculum which will act as the principle record of competency and clinical practice progression.
  • It is recognised that tACPs may differ in competence achievement with respect to specific procedures as detailed in the curriculum.
  • All tACPs are accountable for their own professional actions, undertaking all duties in accordance with the relevant Codes of Professional Conduct as well as Trust guidelines and protocols.
  • Practice autonomously as an ACP within their respective team using collaborative and independent judgement to assess, investigate, diagnose, plan, implement, manage, and evaluate clinical nursing and medical care in the management of patients.

  • oAbility to implement evidence based assessment and intervention with regards to physical, cognitive, perceptual, psychological, sensory and social functioning.
  • oAbility to evaluate recommendations according to health care needs and job role / performance competencies or requirements using a comprehensive range of intervention options.
  • oComplex problem solving and prioritisation of tasks experience.
  • oDemonstrate high level written and spoken communication skills with individuals especially where the content may be sensitive or distressing.

Experience and Qualifications Essential
  • oBSc. Degree in Occupational Therapy or equivalent, approved by the HCPC.
  • oRegistration with the regulating body, the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC).
  • oPrevious clinical experience in mental health and/or physical health.
  • oGood understanding of relevant consent and confidentiality legislation/GDPR.
  • oMulti-disciplinary professional team working experience.
  • oComplex case management
  • oAble to provide a service to a diverse range of people to promote good relations and equality.
  • oGood understanding of equality issues and how they affect the workplace.
  • oStandardised physical assessment; Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) trained, incl. effort and reliability testing, e.g. Matheson System, and standardised tests availability e.g. for individuals in employment, considering alternative employment or for pre-employment screening assessments.
  • oStandardised Cognitive assessment, e.g. Neuro-psychological, Neuro-diversity tools.
  • oPost graduate training/experience in condition or rehabilitation management, such as pain, fatigue, stress/anxiety management, neuro-rehabilitation and/or other long term conditions and musculo-skeletal issues including upper limb conditions.
  • oHealth and wellbeing prevention and promotion in the workplace knowledge.
  • Adhere to professional standards for Occupational Therapy Practice, as detailed by the HCPC and the Royal College of Occupational Therapists (RCOT), legal and professional responsibilities.
  • Ability to tailor advice, both verbal and written, to the target audience, e.g. GPs, employers/ managers, HR, Insurance groups etc.

  • oPrevious experience within an occupational health setting.
  • oUnderstanding of current Vocational Rehabilitation issues and an ability to keep abreast of current initiatives and best practice.
  • oWorking understanding of relevant employment law in an occupational health context e.g. Equality Act 2010 and reasonable adjustment application.
  • oAnalysis of Occupational performance/participation, with health and medical aspects. (Biopsychosocial and environmental factors (Physical, sensory/ communication/interaction, cognitive/executive function, neuro- diversity and mental health)
  • oConfident with assessing activity analysis/job demand analysis (JDA) physical/cognitive/psychological aspects of a role.
  • oAbility to write evidence based reports and advice around reasonable adjustments, incl. return to work plans, including use of the Allied Health Professional (AHP) Health and Work Report where applicable.
  • Experience of developing positive relationships with relevant stakeholders (managers, unions, patients etc.)
