A rare opportunity within a senior level position has arisen at East Sussex Healthcare Trust as we are looking for an Associate Director of Performance Improvement.

This position will put our patients at the heart of everything we do by ensuring that we have a reporting and performance management framework in place which informs and enables the Trust to deliver exceptional high quality care.

The role will set the strategic direction for Performance Improvement through high level analysis and reporting, to ensure that performance is easily understood, that plans are on track and where they are not mitigating actions to recover performance are identified through the operating divisions. It will also deliver a single version of the truth, working closely with the Business Intelligence team to support the delivery of a self-serve suite of business intelligence tools and information, as well as business insight which informs decision making across the Trust.

The post holder will be responsible for shaping the Trust's performance scorecards, processes and meetings, producing high quality analysis, diagnosis, and outputs to support informed senior decision making across the Trust and ensure that it has robust operational plans and is able to identify and report progress against them.

Main duties of the job

Our ideal applicant will have extensive experience of operational management where they are able to demonstrate a deep understanding of reporting metrics as well as evidence of delivering performance and service improvements.Project and change management skills will also be important. They will be able to demonstrateexperience of leading relationships with strategic third-party partners and engaging with senior stakeholders, so well-developed influencing and collaboration skills are essential for this role.

Person Specification



  • Educated to master's degree or equivalent relevant post graduate professional qualification
  • Significant post qualification experience or formal/structured training equivalent to a doctorate level post-graduate diploma, working at a senior level, with a strong professional reputation built on a track record of career development through delivery
  • Extensive, highly specialised knowledge of information and quality management gained through senior management experience
  • Extensive knowledge of financial, performance and staff management gained through senior management experience and/or qualification
  • Knowledge of NHS data standards and data definitions and NHS IM& T initiatives
  • Advanced querying and reporting against large relational database management systems
  • Extensive experience of using data and information to influence and drive forward policies and procedures
  • Extensive experience of manipulating, analysing and modelling data and information, to support decision-making and strategic planning


  • Information management qualification
  • Prince 2 or alternative project management qualification



  • Excellent knowledge of NHS performance measures, with in depth knowledge of RTT, DM01, Cancer and A& E measurement
  • Excellent team and resource management skills
  • Ability to develop and model the impact of activity and performance assumptions on clinical services
  • Ability to analyse complex information and develop potential options and / or recommendations on the most appropriate course of action
  • Experience of managing large or pan-organisational projects
  • Significant amount of experience of managing an information function in a complex organisation
  • Substantial relevant experience of implementing information infrastructure and reporting suites
  • Significant amount of experience of managing a team of professionals at General Manager level
  • Significant amount of experience of producing management information and adding value to it for all tiers of a complex organisation
  • Significant level of experience of helping teams prioritise their workloads within a very busy environment
