This is an exciting opportunity for a consultant psychiatrist to provide leadership and medical input to our Female adult inpatient unit - Weaver ward at Brooker Centre. The successful candidate will be joining the inpatient team during an exciting period of community service transformation towards locality based care delivery model across the Trust and will be keen to participate in the change process.

Main duties of the job

You will work closely with the Consultant colleague for Male adult inpatient unit - Bridge ward and will have supervision responsibilities to CT1-3 trainee or FY2 / GP trainee. Please see the job description for more detail.

Job description Job responsibilities

In line with New Ways of Working, the post holder will provide a consultative, supervisory and supportive role to the multidisciplinary teams work. He/she will take an active part in the clinical work of the team and a lead role in the development of the service.

Clinical work also includes assessment, report writing and attendance at Mental Health Act review tribunals. The post holder will also be supported, where appropriate, to develop a special interest in a clinical area, which meets the Trust objectives. The consultant will have RC responsibility for all patients on the ward detained under the Mental Health Act (MHA).

Patients are admitted usually from the Home Treatment Team (HTT) but may also be admitted from the community under the MHA. From time to time patients from other boroughs may be admitted to Weaver ward but every effort is made to repatriate them to their own borough units at the earliest opportunity.

The post holder will be expected to be part of the daily morning planning / task allocation meeting within the team and be responsive and flexible to the needs of the team. Daily planning / task allocation meetings for approximate 30 mins are held on the ward at the start of the day to look at outstanding tasks and respond to developing service user or ward needs and prioritise planning of the MDT input for the day. The post holder will be expected to take an active role and lead in the meetings where necessary.

There are weekly bed management meetings held with the operational team (Adult services) and other community teams to monitor and ensure clear discharge timeframes and patient flow to manage bed occupancy within the borough. The post holder will be expected to be part of weekly bed management meetings to streamline patient flow.

At any given time there are two full time junior doctors (F2/GPVTS, CT level) on the inpatient unit. These may increase to 3 depending on deanery allocation every 4- 6 months. The post holder will have clinical supervisor responsibilities for the trainees on the ward.

There are close working with our HTT and community consultant colleagues Recovery team, EIT, Assessment team. Where necessary, opinions of clinical care of the functional elderly patients can be sought from our LLAMS colleagues in the borough.

The post holder will be enabled to work in a consultative manner, being accessible to team members, GP and primary care staff, patients and carers, for the provision of expert advice and interventions in a timely manner. The interface between the Inpatient Team and other parts of the service will be formalised. It is anticipated that all teams will develop clear and open communication with each other.

Person Specification Registration Essential
  • Full registration with General Medical Council
  • Inclusion on or eligible for inclusion on the Specialist Register of the General Medical Council or within 6 months of CCST/CCT or equivalent in General Adult psychiatry at date of interview.
  • Section 12 (2) Approval + Approved Clinician Status or demonstrated ability to gain approval within 3 months of appointment
QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING Essential
  • MbChb, MBBS or equivalent
  • Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent
  • 3 years higher professional training in General Adult psychiatry.
Transport Essential
  • Holds valid UK driving licence and will use own car for work related travel OR provides evidence of proposed alternative.

  • Excellent knowledge in specialty
  • Excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty
