This is a Band 5-band 6 Development role within Respiratory Physiotherapy, 37.5 hours. This role is an exciting opportunity to develop and progress your respiratory skills on the acute wards at Torbay hospital. The post will be competency based to develop your skills within respiratory Physiotherapy on Surgical, medical and acute care wards. You will also develop your management of respiratory outpatients and pulmonary rehab

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work within the inpatient Physiotherapy Team at Torbay Hospital. The post holder will be part of the 7 day service, working at the weekend once a month. The post holder will be part of the on-call service and once competent will support band 5's that are on-call. The post will work over a variety of areas ICU, Medical respiratory, Surgical Respiratory and Elderly rehabilitation. The post holder will complete the appropriate courses to allow them to provide senior leadership to their specialist area and deputise for the Band 7 when required. The post holder will provide respiratory care in clinics, for outpatients and home-visits.

To act as a source of expertise on the assessment and management of patients presenting with a wide range of respiratory pathologies. They will provide education to physiotherapists, student physiotherapists, skilled non registered staff, other healthcare professionals, GPs, Consultants, patients and their carers.

To work with the MDT in identifying appropriate physiotherapy treatments and managements. Work closely with both the OT's and discharge coordinators in facilitating appropriate patient discharge plans. To utilise all current discharge services and planning procedures

To educate and train physiotherapists, students and other healthcare professionals in the physiotherapeutic management of chronic and acute respiratory conditions.

Person Specification

Knowledge and experience


  • Working knowledge of a broad range of Respiratory, musculoskeletal, neurological and medical conditions common in the elderly
  • Competent IT skills.
  • Knowledge of the relevant NSFs and clinical guidelines
  • Experience of working as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Experience supervising student physiotherapists or physiotherapy assistant/technical instructors/support workers
  • An understanding of Clinical Governance and its implications for services, including experience of quality issues and participation in research and audit.


  • Experience of primary care rehabilitation or respiratory services.
  • Knowledge and understanding of complex respiratory assessment/skills

Qualifications and training


  • Diploma/degree in physiotherapy
  • State registration - current HCPC certificate
  • Evidence of CPD maintained in a portfolio, including attendance at recent Postgraduate courses relevant to the clinical field
  • Experience within the NHS including experience as a Band 5 Physiotherapist


  • Post graduate training/experience in respiratory
  • Outpatient Respiratory experience
  • Experience in ICU
