The Case Investigator will be an autonomous and independent expert investigator who will be able to work both independently and as part of an investigation team and/or panel. They will need to be able to understand and interpret HR policies and best practice in order to make informed, risk-based recommendations and decisions.

The Case Investigator will undertake investigations for all matters relating to clinical and non-clinical employees such as disciplinary, grievance, bullying and harassment and whistleblowing plus any other matters which may involve an investigation. They will ensure that all aspects of the investigation are dealt with in a timely and appropriate manner.

They will receive and analyse information often of a highly confidential and sometimes distressing nature, and be expected to attend Disciplinary and/or Appeal Hearings to present cases to a panel with the support from an HR professional. They will also be required to review cases of other investigators as part of the appeals process and chair grievance panels.

Main duties of the job

Investigate employee relations cases both clinical and non-clinical as assigned by the Head of HR Services including complex and high-profile investigations of varying nature.

As the independent Investigation Lead, work with clinical experts where needed to ensure independence is maintained whilst drawing on clinical information relevant to the investigation.

To participate in the development and improvement of the investigations process at North Bristol NHS Trust.

Be required to undertake difficult investigation interviews this may involve discussing complex, highly sensitive and contentious information in an occasionally hostile environment where there are barriers to acceptance and there is a requirement to take control of the situation, but at the same time explain the rationale for the meeting.

Person Specification

Education/Training/Qualfications

Essential

  • Knowledge of specialist HR Topics
  • Willingness to undertake NBT Investigations Training


Work Experience

Essential

  • Sound experience of undertaking investigations and making recommendations eg. disciplinary, grievance, bullying and harassment case work.
  • Experience of presenting cases at hearing/appeal stages
  • Experience of using analytical skills to understand a situation and the impact or the actions of those involved
  • Experience of using compassionate and open questioning techniques to ensure the colleague voice is heard.


Knowledge/Skills and Experience

Essential

  • IT proficiency particularly in the use of Microsoft Office Word, Teams and Excel
  • Demonstrate a range of skills in relation to influencing, negotiation analytical and problem solving.
  • Ability to work flexibly, manage, organise and prioritise own workload and complete investigations in timely manner.
  • Excellent communication skills appropriate for a wide range of audiences including trade unions.
  • Ability to deal with complex, contentious, high profile and confidential issues.
  • Able to use own initiative, act independently and remain calm in stressful situations
  • Able to establish and maintain credibility with managers and staff through knowledge and confidence.
