We are looking for an individual who has an excellent understanding of evidenced based-practice within the specialty of stroke, with the ability to influence and implement best-practice, to ensure we are continuously improving the quality of services provided to our patients.

The successful applicant will lead our Acute SLT Stroke Team at the Lister Hospital.Our Acute Stroke service offers a fast paced and exciting environment where you will benefit from the broad knowledge and experience of the whole team. You will be working alongside Nurses, PTs, OTs, Consultants, Dieticians and Psychologists. You will be embedded in a large department of other SLTs and SLTas who to deliver services in acute, inpatient, community and domiciliary settings to our service users across east and north Hertfordshire.

This role would be an excellent opportunity for a Band 7 therapist looking to develop their skills or as a development opportunity for an experienced Band 6 therapist.We offer a full seven day service including bank holidays, which offers additional supplementary pay.

A full valid driving licence and access to a car to use regularly for business purposes is essential for community posts (unless you have a disability as defined by the Equality Act 2010).

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the role are to provide clinical leadership to the SLT Acute Stroke Service
  • You will demonstrate your highly specialist knowledge of dysphagia and communication by using sound evidence based care
  • Act, within the Acute Stroke service, as a resource and provide advice for Speech & Language Therapists, other professionals and colleagues within the MDT about the assessment, treatment, management and care of patients with SLT needs post Stroke.
  • Develop highly specialist programmes of assessment,treatment and intervention for Stroke patients with communication and/or swallowing deficits
  • You will support the team of SLTs and SLTas by providing clinical supervision and clinical leadership
  • You will be involved in complex discharge planning and mental capacity assessments
  • You will participate in daily MDT meetings to discuss patient care, ensuring SLT goals are embedded in the overall patient management.
  • Manage and prioritise own clinical workload as appropriate, working efficiently to manage professional time and delegate according to the training and competency levels of other team members to ensure the effective delivery of the service.
  • You will be expected be aware of national guidance related to SNAPP and aim to deliver and monitor SLT intervention against a SSNAP rated service
  • Ensure a high standard of patient care is provided including implementing and reviewing clinical standards relevant to the work undertaken.

The Speech and Language Therapy Service in East & North Hertfordshire is an integrated acute and community service covering community clinics, inpatient Neurological Rehabilitation and the Acute and Stroke teams based at the Lister Hospital.

The SLT service offers the following:

The post-holder will work closely with the Speech and Language Therapy team and the wider Multi-Disciplinary Team to provide clinical leadership and highly specialist assessment, diagnosis and management of adults with acquired communication and swallowing needs within a Acute Stroke Ward. The post holder demonstrate effective clinical practice through continued learning, reflective practice and supervision.

Qualifications & Training


  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree
  • Health Professions Council licence to practise
  • Registered member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
  • Achievement of Dysphagia competencies
  • Evidence of successful completion of specialist post graduate short courses relevant to the adult caseload
  • Membership/attendance Special Interest Groups relevant to the post



  • Experience relevant to an adult caseload
  • Management of dysphagia in acute, rehabilitation, community, OP settings
  • Able to demonstrate the application of in depth, new and ongoing learning and experience to clinical practice
  • Experience in the provision of training for others
  • Well-established knowledge of assessment tools relevant to an adult client group including: Dysphagia/Dysphasia/Dysarthria/ Dyspraxia/Dysphonia/Dysfluency/Dysgra phia/ Dyslexia/Dementia
  • Well-established knowledge of a range of relevant therapeutic interventions relevant to the client group (as above)
  • Knowledge of professional standards including record keeping
  • Well-established knowledge of the management of people with progressive neurological conditions
  • Knowledge of the range and applications of communication aids
  • Knowledge of the application and protocol for use of videofluoroscopy
  • Knowledge of professional standards including record keeping
  • A good understanding of the roles of other professionals in acute, rehabilitation and community settings
  • Well-established knowledge of national policies and procedures relevant to adults
