An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our friendly team at the Wheelchair & Special Seating Service, based at the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield.

We are looking for a dedicated individual with a problem-solving approach, and an interest in optimising functional independence and quality of life through use of specialist equipment and posture management.

This is a challenging role with plenty of variety. You will be part of a team of clinicians spanning Band 3 - Band 7, where personal and professional development is encouraged. The post will provide the opportunity to learn new skills, including working with both adults and children, delivering hospital and community-based outpatient clinics, home visits, and working closely with external equipment suppliers.

The post holder will initially work in a supervised capacity, whilst undergoing comprehensive in-house and external training, with the long term intention for the individual to work independently and with autonomy. You will work within a supportive multi-disciplinary team which includes experienced Rehabilitation Engineers, Wheelchair Technicians, and a Physiotherapist.

You will be a current qualified Health Professional (Physiotherapist/Occupational Therapist/Nurse/Prosthetist etc with an interest in Wheelchair provision) or able to show demonstrable experience of working with wheelchairs or specialist seating, such as in a rehabilitation engineering background.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be required to provide a specialist technical and support role within the Wheelchair & Special Seating Service. You will contribute to the provision, assessment and maintenance of powered and non-powered wheelchairs and accessories for mobility, special seating and pressure care to people with profound physical and/or learning disabilities and those with speech and language difficulties.

The post holder will initially provide elementary advice and assistance to the team, whilst being involved in a supporting capacity in specialised clinics. Following a period of individualised training and supervision, which will facilitate the post holder to develop the specialist skills required, they will be expected to lead independent general clinics and visits to ensure the individual needs of service users with disabilities through the appropriate referral, assessment and subsequent safe provision of equipment.

Please note that this post involves lone working in the community and driving across the South Yorkshire region, therefore access to a car and a clean driving license is essential.

You will be part of an MDT providing holistic, individualised care for people with long-term and often complex needs.

About us

You will be working for an organisation which values and respects all of its staff and the community it serves. The Trust is a leader in the NHS and research sectors and provides excellent benefits for its staff. This includes a firm commitment to professional development of it's staff together with the provision of an excellent health and well-being support service.

The Sheffield Wheelchair and Special Seating Service is one of the largest of its kind in England, providing a range of specialist mobility equipment to children and adults with limited mobility, including those with complex physical and learning disabilities, and many with multiple pathologies.

The service covers a large catchment area of Sheffield, Barnsley, Bassetlaw and Rotherham (currently special seating only).

The service belongs to the Specialised Rehabilitation Services directorate which also includes the Princess Royal Spinal Cord Injury Centre, Prosthetics & Orthotics, and Gait Analysis Lab. The post is a static post in Wheelchair Services.
